- VarioS-8 Controllable DC Pump (2700 GPH) - Reef Octopus
Reef Octopus VarioS DC pumps give you enhanced performance and precise control of flow through your aquarium's reactors, sump, or closed loop system.
With complete control through the VarioS Controller, you can control the flow of the pump, enter feed modes (15 or 60 minutes), add a safety float switch (included), or simply connect it to a third party controller like an Apex.
- Max Flow: 2700 GPH
- Max Head: 18 FT
- Dimensions: 5.7" L x 3.75" W x 5.5" H
Efficient - Safe - Reliable
5 Flow Settings - Precise control of the pump for any application.
True Slow Startup - Easy on equipment and saves energy.
Detachable Controller - Waterproof union.
Float Switch - Creates a new standard for pump safety.
Rotatable Volute - Rotates in 90-degree intervals.
Integrated Memory - Keeps programming even during power outages.
Feed Mode - Shuts down for 15 or 60 minutes.
Submersible or External - Perfect as a return, closed loop, or reactor/filter pump.
Super Quiet Operation - Perfect for places where any noise is not tolerable.
The safe and energy efficient VarioS DC pump now include the new VarioS controller giving you more control. With 5 different energy saving speeds and two feed modes, the controller lets you know what your pump is doing at a glance.
Third Party Control
There is a dedicated port on the VarioS controller letting you directly connect your VarioS pump to any third party controller through a 0-10V reference port. Controlling your pump through a controller like an Apex lets you create your own flow profiles which are particularly handy for closed loop systems creating a random flow throughout the aquarium.
Having a pump that lets you directly attach a float switch has several advantages. The float can let you set high or low points in your sump, skimmer cup, or display tank that will shut the pump off when the float is activated.
The VarioS controller includes a waterproof 3-conductor union that connects to the pump creating a safe and detachable connection.

very good By RT on 5/21/2020RT would recommend this product to a friendThis pump is excellent as I owned the various 6 before and was happy with it. The only issue I can possibly critique is that at 5 levels of controllability seems that the lowest level is still a tremendous amount of output. The pump is silent, works well, is built solid, and I have had zero issues after 18 months. I would highly recommend this after 12 years in the hobby.
Silent Powerful and Reliable By Kyle on 7/14/2019Kyle would recommend this product to a friendI've been running this pump for a little over two years now at 30%. Going from a hammerhead (albeit at about 15 feet head pressure - I moved) to this was quiet a shock - completely silent.
I have had an issue where it fails to start up after a power loss but found that if your using the 10v input, a fresh input signal (which controllers seem to do automatically) does kick it back in to action. My controller box leds for 20% and 40% also don't light up anymore under manual control but since I'm using the 10v input it does not really matter.
Usually two bugs like above would cause a problem for me but the pump does exactly what I need it to do 100% of the time. The fact that it does so just sipping electricity and completely silent means I bought a 2nd as a backup.
If you need a silent dc pump and are planning on using the 10v input - this is a good choice. I do not know if the pump may eventually restart in manual control mode after a power loss or if they have resolved this in firmware currently being shipped. Just do a power loss test it if using manual control to be sure.
Quiet and easy use By Bryan on 5/5/2019Bryan would recommend this product to a friendUsing this pump for 6 months. No issues or problems. Using with the apex but I dont adjust any of the parameters. I run it on a 210. And the flow it more that enough. I run it on setting 3 and flow is good through sump. Pump is super quiet.
Excellent By andrew on 1/25/2019andrew would recommend this product to a friendI have this installed on a 64 gallon custom cube, with a 24 gallon sump (Trigger 20C). It's incredible. It is amazingly quiet, even at the highest speed setting (there are 5). Overkill for a 64 and a 24 sump? It really isn't. I love the ability to completely control flow at a very low speed or a very high speed.
Unreliable By Cole on 1/11/2019Cole wouldn't recommend this product to a friendWithin a week of running, the power supply burned up. Took almost a week to get coral vue to replace it. Then the pump started turning off and on on it's own. Do not buy this pump.
Quiet and powerful By Damion on 12/15/2018Damion would recommend this product to a friendI can achieve 1200gph with 5ft of head at 30% Apex controlled and at only 30 watts of power! I just replaced a Mag AC pump that did 1200gph at 90 watts. Quite a difference and no motor hum, it is dead silent!
Quiet, Efficient and Powerful By BigHildy53 on 11/10/2018BigHildy53 would recommend this product to a friendI have two of these pumps, one as my return and the other for my manifold. The one for my manifold serves as a backup return pump also. The pump is quiet, easy to clean, and it works.
Great Pump By Mark on 11/5/2018Mark would recommend this product to a friendPump is far from silent but runs great. I have it plumbed externally and love the controllability.
I love this pump!!! By Joshua on 3/28/2018Joshua would recommend this product to a friendWhen I started looking for a pump the number 1 priority was that I needed something quiet. Next I wanted something that didn't consume too much power, and then I looked at ease of controls and other options. I have yet to see just how this is affecting my power bills as I only got it running three days ago, but already I am so happy. The only way I can tell this pump is running is the water coming out of my returns. The pump is SO quiet and I am loving it. The controller and options are really nice as well. So happy I went with this pump. Thank you BRS for the recommendations!
We better then eco tech pumps By Sean on 2/24/2018Sean would recommend this product to a friendMy power supply went out twice on my ecotech Vector1 pump. It was still under warranty but was through screwing with it. This Various-8 puts out way more water and has been running for 8 months without an issue! Great pump!
Awesome pump By Scott on 2/5/2018Scott would recommend this product to a friendThis is as good as or better than my Vectra L1 on my other tank. Even though no problem with the Vectra wanted to try the RO on my other 160 gallon tank. Quiet, well-made with no problems over 4 months. Great pump at a great price!
Have 2 By Bret on 1/6/2018Bret would recommend this product to a friendI have this on my 180 reef and it's running as my main pump for 6 months without fail. I had a v-6 fail on my discus breeding rack and they over nighted me the parts to fix the pump. Make sure the bearing is pressed in where the tail shaft spins and you won't run into that problem. If customer support wasn't as good as they were I would have been upset but I like this over the eco tech pumps I have by far.
These come with both a union and a nipple output attachments. Does the nipple restrict flow?
The way I'm reading it, the barb fitting is not a reducing bushing. Have a great day!
What do I need to hook these pumps up to my apex gold? I have a vdm but am unsure of what else I need.
Is there an extension for the cable? I need more then 6 ft
I'm afraid we don't sell extension cords directly, but I imagine any appropriate grounded cord would work.
Have a great day!
Can this pump be connected to the icecap battery backup?
The Varios pumps are compatible with the Ice Cap battery. It's just a matter of using the right power plug adapter, and Ice Cap provides a number of plug adapters for the majority of pumps on the market.
Is there a cable to extend from the pump to the controller? I purchased two of these pumps for a build and my control box is to far away to connect to the pumps
Unfortunately there are no cable extensions for the varios pumps.
