Owners Manual

The Tunze Comline DOC 9001 skimmer utilizes Tunze's "Flash Skimming" principle. The skimmer is quiet and generates a very large volume of small bubbles for efficient skimmer operation. It operates stand-alone without needing any additional equipment (feed pumps, etc) and mounts to the tank via a convenient magnet holder strong enough for glass up to 3/8" thick.

The TUNZE® Foamer generates large volumes of fine air bubbles with a diameter between .0039 to .011 in. (0.1 to 0.3 mm). On the surface of the air bubbles, pollutants such as protein, cellulose, dead cells, etc. are adsorbed immediately. The water/air mixture expands and stabilizes in the skimmer cup reactor, the water returns to the aquarium, and the protein-loaded air bubbles spill over into the skimmer cup. The patented anti-overfoaming system intermediate chamber prevents the skimmer from over foaming and controls the skimmer performance, depending on the water level and organic load. This “flash skimming” principle, compared to large skimmers with long contact time, is obtained because the substances adsorbed by the air bubbles are not released again, thus they don‘t return to the aquarium water.

  • Magnet Does Not Hold Skimmer In Place By Dave on 5/10/2017

I have this skimmer in a innovative marine 30l fits good in the center chamber. The skimmer produces very well when it is not laying in the bottom of the tank. It produced 0 micro-bubbles since day one. The issue I have with it is the magnet does not hold the skimmer. It would work one day and then it would slide down and over flow the collection cup. I had to order another magnet and remove the magnet from the side and mount both magnets on the back of the skimmer one towards the top and one towards the bottom. The skimmer now stays put where you need it.
  • Beast mode on 20G long By Cory K. on 3/15/2017

    My first impeller wheel skimmer.
After 2 weeks of break in time, I found running the air restriction is needed. It produces heaps of foam. Very reminiscent of lava flowing over a volcano.. and if you drive near a sewage plant. Well then you know that smell this skimmer produces. ... I run this is surface skim mode.
  • GREAT! By Darryl on 7/24/2016

This skimmer is Great for a small reef and fowler tank have 3 of them 1 on a 29 biocube reef,1 on a 20 long reef and a 30 fowler.
    Works gratin all .
Keeping the water level is key to its greatness have the TUNZE Nano osmolator on all tanks and that makes it sweet! Micro bubbles go away after break in.
  • Good Alternative to Ghost Skimmers By Brandon on 6/29/2016

I have an IM Nuvo 30L Reef. After reading numerous negative reviews on the Ghost Skimmers ( The ones specifically made for IM) Micro Bubbles are a huge issue with them. I decided to give this one a try. It is well made, though it does seem to "fall apart" when you're first installing it. But after it is in the back chamber it holds together quite well. It took about two weeks of breaking in and adjusting the air intake, but it works wonders now... I may have to upgrade when my bioload increases but for what it is, it works great.
  • Great for my 40 gallon By Ricksreef on 4/3/2016

Got this for my 40 gallon IM Nuvo.It works great and starting skimming fron day one.
  • Bubbles! By Chad on 3/21/2016

I purchased this skimmer mainly due to it's size, the sleek look, and the Tunze name. Upon receipt, I wasn't impressed with the build quality -- everything is just barely held together with thin plastics and every time I go to empty the cup, it tries to fall apart. I'm running it in a little 10 gallon framed tank, so to get it to clear the lip, I had to use the mounting extension; however when doing so it sags badly and looks awful. I finally had to give up on the extension and mount it under the lip, meaning my water level in the tank is now constantly visible. It still sags even with the standard magnet mount, but less so. When trying to get it dialed in, I would have days where I would empty it in the morning, then all of a sudden it decides to go nuts and overflow by the time I made it home from work. I finally have it working where I can at least go a full day without too many worries. I've had it running for two and a half months now and it skims well, but the biggest problem is the bubbles! I kept waiting for it to break in and stop dumping a ton of micro-bubbles into the tank, but I'm beginning to suspect it's defective or something. I like that it actually skims and is a nice compact size, and that it included a surface skimming attachment, but the flimsy construction, temperamental adjustments, and unrelenting bubbles leave me hesitant to recommend this product.
  • Awesome Skimmer By Sean on 8/1/2015

I really like this skimmer now that it has broken in (about a month). After some adjustments and tinkering it produces a nice dark nasty skimmate! I have it in a chamber that has a constant water level and have slowly been dialing back the air to get great results. Not sure what others are doing wrong
  • Another awesome product from Tunze By Joseph on 5/4/2015

This skimmer works perfect. For its size it is crazy how much it will skim. I used it in a biocube 29 for 6-9 months as a normal skimmer, than inside of a 40 gallon breeder as a surface skimmer. Does just exactly as it should. Would still be using it, but sold my tank. When i reset up my biocube it is a must unless they develop an even better one.
  • Takes a while to break in and is very sensitive to water level By Waboss on 2/12/2015

Like Dominik, I was tinkering with it daily to try and get good skimmate, but after about a month of running, it seems to have dialed in and is producing skimming pretty well now. It's a decent skimmer if you have patience.
  • requires constant attention and adjustments By Dominik on 2/3/2015

this skimmer is a major pain. I have ATO, so the water level stays constant. But even with a constant water level, the cup keeps filling up with water. to prevent water from getting into cup, I have to adjust air flow and keep opening it over time. Major pain!
I will do a bit more research but if I cannot get it to work I will go back to my previous skimmer.

Product Questions

Will it fit in the 2 chamber of a jbj nano cube 24? Looking for a protein skinner that will and do a good job. I'm not a fan of the air driven ones
Question by: Johnny on Jun 29, 2016 10:08:00 AM
We are not familiar with the JBJ back compartment. The full size is L4.3 x W2.5 x H8.5 in which you will need to have in the chamber.

If the collection cup were to overflow, would it overflow back into the tank or would there be a possibility that it would spill onto the floor?
Question by: Courtney on May 31, 2017 7:03:00 PM
The skimmer is designed to be run in-tank/in-sump, and as a result any overflow should be directed back into the tank.

Have a great day!

Does this skimmer fit in an IM Nuvo fusion 20?
Question by: Jason on Mar 12, 2016 1:42:00 AM
Great question!
Unfortunately the Tunze Comline will not fit in the Nuvo 20. The only alternative is the Desktop Ghost skimmer by Innovative Marine. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
