Product Questions

How deep should i have the inlet and outlet pipe in my tank?
Question by: Cale on Jan 3, 2023, 5:17 PM
The inlet/outlet is not adjustable. If the skimmer bubbles cannot reach the skimmer cup then you will need to raise the water level of the tank.

Will this work on the back of a JBJ 45 gallon with the overflow compartments?
Question by: David on Dec 31, 2021, 12:57 AM
If you could let us know the dimensions of your compartments we will better be able to assist.
Answer by: Matt Lucero (BRS Staff) on Feb 4, 2022, 1:51 PM
Is the width of the actual box 3.5” inches. Or overall 3.5” from pipe to back of housing. In a pickle. Got 3” from wall to back of tank..
Question by: Dylan on Feb 2, 2020, 10:01 PM
Unfortunately 3.5" would be the minimum you need to make it fit. Even at that it would be a tight fit.

Take care

Can I use this in 30 gallon tank?
Question by: Vivek Shukla on Jan 31, 2019, 9:01 PM
That is a good question. Yes you can put this on a 30 gallon tank. This skimmer is rated for tanks up to 100 gallons! Just be sure you have a 8" x 3.5" space available outside the tank where you intend to mount the unit. I hope this is helpful. Have a great day :)
Answer by: Ash on Feb 6, 2019, 10:15 AM
Would this work in an aquarium with about 2" wide rim around the top? Thank you.
Question by: Mo on Apr 25, 2017, 10:45 PM
Hey there,
Unfortunately that will be too thick to work with this skimmer. The classic 1000 will work with rimmed aquariums with a rim thickness of up to 1.125".

Happy reefing!
Answer by: Zack on Apr 28, 2017, 11:01 AM
How much clearance do I need between the tank and the wall?
Question by: Matt on Dec 12, 2016, 10:17 AM
Great question! You will need to account for 3.5" - 4" of clearance for proper installation of this skimmer. :-)
Answer by: Randy on Dec 13, 2016, 2:24 PM
I have a shallow tank which is 13 " hight, is this possible to hang on the back?, i dont mind if it hang off exceed the bottom of the tank. But will the skimmer work and funtion properly?
Question by: tommy on Jul 16, 2016, 6:55 PM
Hi Tommy,
The skimmer can hang off the back of your tank, and even if it physically sits lower than your tank that is fine. Ultimately the drain for the skimmer just needs to be able to freely drain back into the tank.
Thanks for the question and if you have any more, let us know.

What is the air valve for on hob reef octopus Skimmer 1000
Question by: Joey Gillette on May 8, 2016, 12:07 AM
Great question!
The Air Valve will be for adjusting the amount of air into the skimmer to adjust the amount and shape of the bubbles. this can help to reduce overfilling and keep a solid skimmate production.
Answer by: Connor on May 10, 2016, 5:11 PM
Hi, I was wondering how high this sits above the rim of the aquarium. I have a slight clearance issue, and am wondering how much space I need to get the waste cup off. Thank you very much.
Question by: Len on Mar 30, 2016, 8:46 PM
Great question!
This skimmer will need 5" above the rim of the tank. ideally 6" is nice to have to remove the collection cup and skimmer removal. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor on Apr 4, 2016, 10:38 AM
Does my tank have to be a certain height for this skimmer to work properly?
Question by: Santiago on Feb 7, 2016, 10:33 AM
Great question!
Ideally the tank should be around 17" high or higher for this to work well without hanging off the back to the bottom. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor on Feb 10, 2016, 6:38 PM
Is it ok to place a media bag in the return side of the skimmer, or is it not enough flow to go threw the bag?
Question by: Brandon on Aug 1, 2014, 12:20 PM

Hi Brandon,
I personally wouldn't put a filter sock on the skimmer itself. The main concern is that if the filter sock clogs up and reduces the output a little bit it could cause your skimmer cup to overflow all over the floor :(
