Regal Skimmer Setup Guide

VarioS Controller Quick Start Guide

Reef Octopus Regal Skimmers now incorporate the new VarioS S pinwheel series of pumps. The new pumps are DC powered allowing for several advantages over traditional AC style pumps. The VarioS pumps can be fully controlled by a 3rd-party controller or through the included control unit. With 5 different preset speeds, and multiple feed modes, you can fine-tune Regal skimmers for superior performance on your particular system.

Recirculating skimmers can be employed either externally or internally (in-sump) and are usually a bit more efficient than the traditional in-sump skimmer. They do require a bit more space and height generally but the ability to fine tune, the feed pump, recirculating pump, and discharge lets you create the perfect skimmer for your tank needs. When skimmers are mounted externally, we frequently suggest a Waste Collecter, however, Reef Octopus has thought one step farther than the competition integrating a float switch into the collection cup, protecting from potential messy overflows.

Note: A feed pump is required that can flow around 1.5 - 2 times the systems volume. We suggest a pump around 600-1000 GPH, and particularly like the VarioS 6 Controllable DC pump or Sicce Syncra Silent 5.0, we also highly recommend a gate valve to help control and fine tune the flow of water into the skimmer from the feed pump.

  • Excellent! By Josh on 6/9/2017

I searched long and hard for an external protein skimmer. I had an old down draft ETSS skimmer that would never produce any foam. I decided to go with the regal due to the float switch on top of the collector cup. This thing has been amazing. The variable speed controller allows fine tuning between wet and dry skimming. I never have to adjust the output valve as I leave it wide open. Water level is constant and i have yet to have it overflow out of the protein skimmer. During break in I did turn the recirculating pump up too high and this caused the collector cup to fill up with water. Once broken in I have left it on a 2 or a 3 for daily skimming. When i do water changes i max it to a 5 for a bit to really pull the crud out. The only downside to this skimmer is the price. In the long run I believe that to have a protein skimmer running out of sight out of mind makes this well worth it. I used a panworld 50px-x along side this and it works flawlessly.
