- Hammerhead Float Plus - Algae Free
For Glass or Acrylic Aquariums 1/2" to 5/8" thick
The Hammerhead is Algae Free’s most popular magnetic cleaner. It works great on almost all glass and acrylic tanks up to 5/8" thick.
- Glass aquariums holding up to 110 to 200 gallons
- Acrylic aquariums 48" long and 30" high
- Large 4" x 2" cleaning area
Why does BRS recommend this?
With properly sized magnets and now includes the scraper attachment, Algae Free has made one of the best algae scrapers in the industry. Most of their value is the fact all of them (except the Great White) do float if the connection through the aquarium is lost for easy retrieval, which is the frustrating point for most other magnet cleaners in the industry.

works fantastic! By Jason on 5/26/2018Jason would recommend this product to a friendlike pretty much everyone in the hobby I also used a mag float. this is a better product in every way. very happy with this purchase
Simply that best I have ever used By Thomas on 3/15/2018Thomas would recommend this product to a friendFor years I struggled with the thought of dropping this much cash on a glass cleaner. Never would I have thought that there would have been this much difference between brands of cleaners. After all, it is just a magnet and a scrubbing pad, right? How wrong I was!
The first thing I noticed was the strength of the Algae Free magnet. That strength makes all the difference and I was amazed at how easy it was to clean the glass in one pass. No more back and forth over the same spot trying to remove those stubborn growth areas. One important thing to note is to make sure you get the right scrubber for the thickness of glass you are working with. I have the hammerhead and the glass of my tank is right at 5/8”. When I scrub over a heavy deposit of algae I am pulling/pushing with quite a bit of force and I need to make sure that I have a firm grip on the scrubber. Having a larger or stronger magnet would definitely hinder the cleaning operation more than help it.
Ascetically, I feel that the scrubber is non-obtrusive and does not take away from the overall appearance of my tank. For me, this was an important aspect of my decision to buy it because, if you are like me you leave the scrubber stuck to the side of your tank all the time. Because of this, with my previous scrubber there was always that grey plastic hump with black and red lettering on the face staring at you with that "I'm a cheap piece of plastic" look. With the Algae Free scrubber, there is no plastic hanging on the outside of the tank. It is real wood, with a quality finish and modest labeling. The piece on the inside is plastic but it is a dull black and blends in with the overflow and other equipment in the tank so well that it doesn't even catch your eye when viewing.
Lastly, the ability to purchase replacement scrubber pads means that this could potentially be the last scrubber I every buy. With the cheap scrubbers, when I wore out the pads I bought a new one. I now have 4-5 of them in a box and if I add the cost of them up I would easily have spent 2x the amount that my hammerhead cost me.
Hope it help and if you do buy an Algae Free scrubber I am sure that you will appreciate your new scrubber as much as I do mine.
Best Mag Cleaner By Allen on 3/7/2018Allen would recommend this product to a friendI have been in the hobby for a long time. I had this old mag float with the glued on razor attachment. This was much stronger and the built in blade attachment makes it so easy to get the edges, corners and sand. Because of the way its build I can get the glass covered by the sand bed by going slow and no scratches. Great products.
Great product By Bow69 on 1/9/2018Bow69 would recommend this product to a friendVery strong magnet, scrapper works well also.
Best Cleaner Available!!! By Forsaken77 on 12/17/2017Forsaken77 would recommend this product to a friendFirst off, I want to state that you most definitely have to pick the right Algae Free Magnet for your tank. The magnets are so strong that I can easily see them cracking the glass on a smaller tank, or possible wobbling the whole stand when you move it.
The Hammerhead is meant for larger tanks. Things that I have repeatedly scrubbed with my Magfloat came off in 1 pass with the Algae Free.
It's got a nice, real wood handle and its box is perfect for storage. I NEVER leave magnetic cleaners in my tank due to some rusting under the cover.
To store them, you either have to place something between the two halves, like most cleaners, or a better way is to snap them back to back so the connection isn't as strong.
Definitely the best magnetic cleaner available. Just try to pick it up on a sale. Makes the price a little easier to justify.
Does the Job By Carmen R. on 11/16/2017Carmen R. would recommend this product to a friendCleans great. Is hard to move along the glass but cleans great.

Great mag cleaner. By Bow on 6/24/2017Bow would recommend this product to a friendVery strong and easy to use.
Excellent By Jeff on 4/5/2017Jeff would recommend this product to a friendWorks great although if I let the coraline get out of hand it's still easier to use a razor blade..... But if you keep up on it this will be a great investment
Great By Nick on 3/7/2017Nick would recommend this product to a friendWorks way better than the mag float I had.
Works great By Lane on 12/17/2016Lane would recommend this product to a friendLove this. It's definitely the easiest way to get rid of the coralline on the front of my bowfront. Only thing that's slightly negative is maybe the magnets are too strong? It's a workout getting it to move across the glass ! Love how well it works tho so that's ok.
Awesome cleaner By Jay on 7/5/2016Jay would recommend this product to a friendBought the Piranha Float Plus. Takes everything, including hard to remove algae (coralline, diatom, etc), with minimal scraping. Worked great on my glass surface with the stainless steel scraper. Love that it floats, though the stainless steel part does not. It fits into the floating portion pretty snugly so when you transition from one side of the aquarium to another, it doesn't pop out when you lose your magnetic connectivity. Also won't simply fall out while floating either. It's possible, but so far, I haven't had it happen.
