RO/DI Upgrades to Optimize Reverse Osmosis System Performance
Most RO/DI systems work great out of the box, but a few smart add-ons can help you produce more consistent water, keep a better eye on filter stages so you can swap them out on time, waste less water, and drastically reduce the chance of a flood and the expense of resulting damage. Even something as simple as using a flush valve before and after production can help keep the membrane cleaner and reduce the amount of TDS creep that reaches the DI stage.
Fix TDS Creep at the Source
TDS creep is the spike of higher dissolved solids that can happen when an RO membrane starts up after sitting idle or when the system constantly cycles in short bursts.
In real-world RO/DI use, a flush valve used before and after production can help rinse the membrane, keep buildup from lingering on the surface, and reduce the amount of TDS that creeps through at startup. That said, to more fully eliminate TDS creep, you will want to manually divert startup water with a 3-way valve or use smarter automation with high and low sensors so the system runs in longer cycles.
Solution:
- Manually divert the first bit of RO water to the drain using a 3-way valve, then send clean RO water to your DI stage.
- Automate the cycle with the a high & low flow switch so your RO/DI runs in longer, smarter fill sessions and avoids frequent start/stop behavior.
3-Way Ball Valve
- Lets you divert startup water with higher TDS away from your DI stage
- Simple upgrade for RO-to-DI plumbing, especially on reservoir fill setups
Tunze RO Water Controller
- Uses dual float switches to control an electronic valve for reservoir filling
- Built-in timer backup adds another layer of protection
- Helps reduce frequent short cycles that can worsen TDS creep
Monitor Water Quality & System Performance
A TDS meter helps you monitor dissolved solids so you can see how your RO membrane and DI stage are performing. Instead of waiting for problems, or swapping filters early, you get simple, real-time feedback on your system’s output.
Where to place probes (common approach):
- Probe 1: After the RO membrane and before the DI stage so you can track membrane performance.
- Probe 2: After the DI stage on the final product water line so you know when DI resin is nearing exhaustion.
- Optional Probe 3: On source water before the sediment filter so you can compare incoming water to RO and DI output.
Dual Inline TDS Options
- Monitors TDS in two locations to show how your system is performing
- One of the easiest “set it and forget it” RO/DI upgrades
Triple Inline TDS Options
- Great if you want to monitor source, RO, and final DI water all at once
- Useful for multi-stage systems where extra checkpoints make troubleshooting easier
Handheld TDS Meter & Thermometer
- Great for spot-checking source water, RO water, final product water, and mixed saltwater
- Useful when testing storage containers, troubleshooting suspect water, or verifying inline meter readings
- Compact tool to keep around for quick water quality checks anywhere in your fish room
Monitor Water Pressure & Add a Booster Pump
RO membranes are pressure-driven. If your incoming pressure is low, your system can produce water slower and less efficiently, often increasing waste water and putting more load on DI resin. A simple pressure gauge tells you what is actually happening before the membrane, and a booster pump solves the problem when pressure is consistently low.
Recommended workflow:
- Install a pressure gauge before the RO membrane to establish a baseline.
- If pressure is low even with new prefilters, consider a booster pump to bring the system into a more efficient operating range.
Pressure Gauge
- Installs inline before the RO membrane with 1/4" quick connect fittings
- Helps you spot pressure drops as filters clog
Aquatic Life Smart Buddie
- Boosts system pressure for faster production and better membrane rejection
- Integrated auto-flush valve plus built-in safety pressure switches
- Easy upgrade for many 50 to 100 GPD RO/DI systems
Auto-Fill & Leak Detection
If your RO/DI fills a container automatically, flood protection is not optional. The goal is simple: shut off water before it hits the floor and alert you if something goes sideways.
Think in layers:
- Primary shutoff: A float valve or sensor-based fill control stops the water when the container is full.
- Secondary safety: Mechanical shutoff devices, alarms, and controller-driven shutoffs cover you if a float sticks, a line pops off, or you forget it is running.
FlowLok Leak Detector
- Mechanical shutoff device that stops water flow when a leak is detected
- Great extra layer of protection for RO/DI systems, reservoirs, and mixing stations
RO/DI Flood Guardian
- Dual optical sensors help automate filling with added precision
- Magnetic mounting makes it easy to use on containers without drilling
Watchdog Leak Detection Alarm
- Standalone audible alarm for quick leak detection
- Sensitive enough to detect RO/DI water on the floor
BONUS: Use a Neptune Systems Apex Instead!
Neptune Systems Apex controllers can add a powerful layer of automation and protection to your RO/DI system. By connecting leak detectors, optical level sensors, and solenoid valves, Apex can automatically start and stop water production, monitor reservoir levels, and shut off the water supply if a leak or unexpected condition occurs. This type of automation helps prevent overflows, protects your home from potential water damage, and reduces the need to constantly monitor your system.
For even deeper monitoring, some hobbyists also use a conductivity probe to track very low conductivity levels in freshwater reservoirs, providing an additional way to keep an eye on water purity and overall system performance.
One of the biggest advantages of Apex is access to Apex Fusion, Neptune Systems’ cloud-based control platform. Through the Fusion app, you can configure your entire Apex ecosystem, create automated routines, and set up alerts that notify you immediately if something changes. Whether it is a leak detected on the floor, a reservoir reaching its fill limit, or a sensor reading outside the normal range, Apex Fusion keeps you informed and in control even when you are away from home.
Think in layers:
- Level sensing: Optical sensors can tell Apex when a reservoir is low, full, or unexpectedly overfilled.
- Water shutoff: A solenoid valve gives Apex the ability to stop product water automatically.
- Leak response: Leak sensors can trigger alarms and immediately shut off water if a spill is detected.
LD-3 Leak Sensor
- Detects water on floors, shelves, or other flat surfaces
- Lets Apex trigger an alarm and shut down the RO/DI system if a leak is detected
MOS Magnetic Optical Sensor
- Compact optical sensor for monitoring water level in reservoirs and containers
- Magnetic mount makes placement easy without drilling
- Useful for low-level, high-level, and backup safety positions
Bottom line: If you address TDS creep, monitor output with a TDS meter, keep pressure in a healthy range, and add flood protection layers, your RO/DI system becomes a lot more efficient and a lot less stressful to run.
