How to Fix a Saltwater Aquarium Water Quality Emergency
No matter how or why your tank is in its current situation, the reality is: there's something in the water you don't want there and you want to get it out.
A water quality emergency could be the result of several different scenarios, including: a large die-off, additive overdose, equipment failure, contamination, maintenance mistake, and more.
We want to make sure that whatever fix we put in place isn't causing more harm than good. Don't start dosing mystery additives and buffers without first understanding the problem.
The emergency response is generally: stop the source, physically remove what you can, dilute what remains, filter the water, maintain oxygen and circulation, then monitor.
1) Remove the Source
The first thing to do is to stop or remove the source of whatever contamination you're dealing with.

For example:

| Too much food was added to the tank | Use a turkey baster or fish net to remove as much as possible, then siphon out the rest |
| Catastrophic equipment failure | Remove it from the system |
| Additive overdose | Stop dosing and turn off any dosing pumps |
Physically removing the source of the problem stops the bleeding and, in most cases, buys you a little more time to work out a solution.
2) Perform a Meaningful Water Change
Immediately after removing the source of the contamination, you'll want to prepare some new saltwater. If you have pre-mixed saltwater at the ready, you're ahead of the curve already.
Take a moment to double check the freshly mixed saltwater's salinity and temperature. It's easy to get in a rush and make things worse for your tank.

Next, perform a meaningful water change.
What does a "meaningful water change" even mean?
Water changes dilute the problem. Assuming you're mixing your salt with pure 0 TDS RO/DI water, doing a 10% water change results in roughly 10% of a dissolved contaminant being removed.
In an emergency situation, a larger 30-50% water change is much more impactful.
Of course, it all depends on how much water you have ready, how large your mixing container is, and the volume of your aquarium.
Once the water change is complete, start mixing up a second batch, just in case. A series of water changes may be necessary depending on the severity of the emergency you're dealing with.
3) Refresh Mechanical & Chemical Filtration Media
Chemical Filtration
I always recommend aquarists have a few clean media bags and a container of carbon ready, even if it's not something you typically run in your system on a day-to-day basis.
While it won't help in every situation, activated carbon is an excellent solution for removing many dissolved organic compounds, discoloration, odors, and contaminants that may remain after performing a water change.

Tip: If you're using a media bag, place it in a high-flow area of your sump so that water is actively flowing through it.
Other Chemical Filtration Options
In addition to carbon, there are some specialty media out there so you can better match the media to the problem at hand.
Chemi-Pure is one of the most popular options in the hobby because it contains not only carbon, but specialty resins too. Some Chemi-Pure mixes also include phosphate reducing media.
One of my personal favorites to have on hand is Poly-Filter. Not only is it a filter pad that will catch physical debris, but it has media bonded to it that can absorb and adsorb contaminants like heavy metals, ammonia, and even some medications.
Fun Fact: Did you know that Poly-Filter changes colors based on what it's removing?
- Blue: Copper
- Orange: Iron
- Red: Aluminum
- Yellow: Ammonia, Amines or Solvents
Mechanical Filtration
This one is a bit more straightforward. Swap out any filter pads or socks for new ones. If you use a filter roller, make sure it has plenty of fleece left and is working as expected.
4) Keep Oxygen and Biological Filtration Working
The goal here is simple: keep water moving, keep oxygen levels high, and keep your biological filter working.
If you're dealing with an issue like knocking an entire bag of fish food pellets into the tank, we want to give the aquarium's biological filter as much support as we can to prevent ammonia from building up.
As that excess organic material begins to break down, bacteria go to work processing it. That bacterial activity consumes oxygen, which means a heavily polluted aquarium can experience falling oxygen levels at the same time ammonia and other waste compounds are increasing.
1) Make sure water is moving through the entire system.
If you have a sump, check to make sure your return pump is running and that water is flowing through your sump as expected. Your skimmer, filter media, refugium, biological media, and other filtration equipment can't do much good if tank water isn't reaching them.
2) Maximize gas exchange in the display tank.
Point one or more powerheads toward the surface so they're creating strong surface agitation. You don't want water splashing out of the aquarium, but you should see plenty of movement across the surface. An air pump and air stone can also be a helpful tool here.
3) Avoid unnecessary disturbance of rock, sand, or biological filter media during the cleanup.
Your beneficial bacteria are part of the solution right now, and removing too much established media at once could reduce the aquarium's ability to process ammonia when you need it most.
5) Monitor the Important Water Parameters
Last but not least, keep an eye on your tank as it recovers. Do a full test of water parameters and log them over the course of a few days to show any trends or changes.

For example, depending on the type of emergency, these are some of the most important parameters to test:

Depending on what sort of emergency got you here in the first place and the results of those tests, you might need another water change, different or refreshed media, fresh mechanical filtration, or additional aeration.
