Maxspect REFINES Magnetic Aquarium Scraper | BRStv Product Spotlight
The Maxspect REFINES Magnetic Scrapers take a familiar reef tank maintenance tool and improve it in a way we haven’t really seen before. Yes, they have strong magnets, a comfortable design, and enough scraping power to make quick work of stubborn algae, but the feature that really sets them apart is the ability to resharpen the scraper blade using a built-in sharpening stone.
That means instead of tossing a dull blade and immediately reaching for a replacement, you can restore its edge and get more life out of it.
Two Sizes for Different Aquariums
The Maxspect REFINES is currently available in two models: Standard and Grande.
The Standard version uses a 2.5-inch-wide scraper blade and is designed for aquarium panels between 3/8" and 5/8" thick. Its wet side measures just 3/4" thick, making it relatively easy to maneuver behind rockwork or corals positioned close to the aquarium glass.
The larger Grande model steps up to a 3.25-inch-wide blade and is designed for thicker aquarium panels between 3/4" and 1". Even with its stronger magnets, the wet side is still only about 1" thick.
That panel thickness range is important. A magnetic scraper isn’t necessarily better just because the magnets are stronger. If the magnet is oversized for thinner glass or acrylic, the scraper can become difficult to move and may increase the risk of scratching the aquarium.
Built for Stubborn Algae
The REFINES uses a rigid 0.8 mm 316L stainless steel scraper blade designed to handle everything from everyday green film algae to tougher calcareous buildup.
It can make quick work of stubborn coralline algae and other hard deposits that softer cleaning pads often struggle with. The rigid blade also works well along the lower portions of the aquarium where algae tends to accumulate near the sand bed.
When cleaning close to the substrate, using the scraper vertically is the safer approach since the heel of the wet side still uses an abrasive cleaning pad.
Acrylic-Safe Options
The REFINES can also be configured for acrylic aquariums.
For acrylic use, remove the gliding feet and swap the stainless steel scraper blade for the included plastic blade. The abrasive pad on the heel is also rated for acrylic, provided you choose the appropriate scraper strength for the thickness of your aquarium panel.
As with any acrylic aquarium cleaner, keeping sand and debris away from the cleaning surfaces is especially important to avoid scratches.
A Scraper Blade You Can Actually Resharpen
The standout feature is built directly into the dry side of the scraper.
At the front of the handle is a slot containing a sharpening stone. Insert the metal blade into the slot at the proper angle and draw it across the stone to restore the scraping edge.
As the blade is sharpened, a small amount of material is removed along with imperfections that develop from repeatedly scraping stubborn buildup off the aquarium.
Before sharpening, it’s a good idea to rinse the blade thoroughly with fresh water so salt doesn’t accumulate on the sharpening stone. Afterward, wipe the blade clean to remove any fine metal particles before putting it back into the aquarium.
It’s a simple feature, but it could significantly extend the useful life of each stainless steel blade.
Maxspect Has Refined the Magnetic Scraper
Between the appropriately sized magnets, thick stainless steel blade, slim wet-side design, acrylic compatibility, and built-in sharpening stone, the Maxspect REFINES brings some genuinely useful upgrades to one of the most common reef tank maintenance tools.
If you routinely battle coralline algae or other stubborn buildup and like the idea of restoring your scraper blade instead of replacing it every time it gets dull, the REFINES is definitely worth a closer look.
