Top 5 Nano Protein Skimmers
If you're having a hard time making a decision on a protein skimmer for your nano aquarium, we've put together a short list of the most wanted nano protein skimmers available on the market today to help you narrow down your choices to the very best.
Hydor Koralia Slim-Skim and Nano-Skim Internal Protein Skimmers
Slim-Skim and Nano-Skim skimmers were designed specifically for nano and mini-reef aquarium use in tanks up to 35 gallons for the Nano-Skim and up to 65 for the Slim-Skim. They are both compact and easy to position with a magnet suction cup support. They feature a special grid for surface water intake, multi-venturi impeller technology, low-power consumption plus adjustable air and foam level control. We awarded the Nano-Skim our Best Nano Product award in 2012, prizing a design “slim enough to fit in the back chamber of a nano or set discreetly in the corner of a small tank.”
Tunze Nano DOC Protein Skimmer 9002
The Tunze Nano 9002 is designed for reef tanks up to 52 gallons and removes up to 80% of organic waste matter, such as protein and cellulose, from aquarium water. The skimmer is great for breeding tanks with living plankton thanks to its gentle operation. They are particularly quiet while running, which is always a concern for nano reefers. Installation is a snap and very little space is required in the aquarium courtesy of the skimmer’s 4.9” L x 2.1” W footprint. A pipe cleaner and brush are also included to help you keep the skimmer clean and running at maximum efficiency. The Tunze Nano DOC 9002 earned Best Protein Skimmer honors in 2011, proving the adage that “good things come in small packages.”
AquaMaxx HOB-1 Hang-On-Back Protein Skimmer
The already awesome AquaMaxx HOB-1 was recently upgraded to include a larger collection cup, an improved hang-on bracket and an advanced bubble plate with conical diffusers like the new ConeS Series. It is rated for aquariums up to 75 gallons in a design thin and light enough to be placed on a nano or other small saltwater tank. The HOB-1 relies on a superbly crafted Italian Sicce Syncra 1.0 pump outfitted with an AquaMaxx needlewheel impeller to vigorously remove waste from your reef tank. The pump is placed inside the skimmer to save space, reduce noise and improve efficiency. The AquaMaxx HOB-1 earned the title Best Protein Skimmer in 2012, with users citing how “pleasantly quiet,” “slim” and “well built” it is. The HOB-1 is AquaMaxx’s flagship skimmer and has been one of Marine Depot’s best-sellers since it was first released.
AquaC Nano Remora Hang-On Protein Skimmer
We are long-time Remora fans and totally dig this miniaturized version of the popular Remora hang-on protein skimmer. It uses 50% less power than a standard Remora yet is still capable of pulling gunk out of reef aquariums up to 25 gallons. San Diego-based AquaC has a long and distinguished history in our hobby. When you see the Nano Remora up close, you can really appreciate the attention to detail. The acrylic fabrication, CNC-machined parts and advanced thermoforming lets you know AquaC is really out to provide hobbyists with a reliable piece of equipment they’ll be proud to use for years to come.
Eshopps Nano Protein Skimmer
We really like the versatility and small size of the Eshopps Nano Skimmer. It has a super compact footprint that is built to fit in the center filter chamber of most all-in-one style aquariums. Another benefit of Eshopps’ nano skimmer is that it can be installed right inside your tank or sump if you aren’t running a tank with a back filter chamber. The skimmer includes an adjustable magnet mount to help you easily dial in the perfect setting. The skimmer is powered by a high-quality Italian-made Sicce pump. The venturi design maximizes efficiency to help maintain crystal-clear water in your reef tank. The skimmer features a removable collection cup for easy maintenance and is rated for use in aquariums up to 35 gallons.
