Nature Dimensions N-Clear M Fleece Roller Filter
Cleaning filter socks is one of those reefkeeping chores that never really goes away. The Nature Dimensions N-Clear M offers a more hands-off approach, automatically removing trapped waste on a roll of fleece that you replace when it runs out.
In this spotlight, Thomas takes a closer look at how the N-Clear M works, its installation options, and how you can expand it for a larger aquarium.
A Compact Roller for Standard Filter Sock Holders
The N-Clear M brings the adaptable design of the original N-Clear to aquariums with larger filtration needs. Its compact body fits most standard 4-inch filter sock holders using the included rubber adapter.
Here are the basics:
- Footprint: Approximately 3.5 × 3 inches
- Total Height: Just under 16 inches
- Maximum Flow Rate: Up to 800 GPH per unit
- Aquarium Size: 30–60 gallons per unit
- Fleece Roll: 82 feet long and 2.5 inches wide
How the Automatic Fleece Filtration Works
Water enters the N-Clear M’s body and passes through the fleece before exiting through the side grilles. Fish waste, uneaten food, and other suspended particles stay trapped in the material.
As the fleece collects debris, the water level inside the body rises. When it reaches the optical sensor, the motor advances the roll, pulling dirty fleece out of the water and exposing fresh material. Once the water level drops, the motor stops.
That process repeats automatically, removing collected waste before it has a chance to break down in the aquarium. Your regular maintenance shifts from washing filter socks to replacing used fleece.
Installation Options for Sumps and All-in-One Aquariums
The included rubber adapter fits most standard 4-inch filter sock holders. It comes with two interchangeable water blockers to help direct water through the filter.
Start with the low-opening blocker. If that leaves a gap where water can bypass the filter, use the high-opening version.
For aquariums without a standard 4-inch sock holder, optional adapters make installation possible in select systems from brands such as Innovative Marine, Waterbox, and Eshopps. Check the adapter compatibility for your specific aquarium before choosing one.
Expand to Match Your System
You can run up to three N-Clear M fleece rollers from a single controller. Start with a Main Unit, then add Extension Units to use additional filter sock positions.
This gives aquariums with dual or triple sock holders a way to expand filtration across multiple units. Each roller is rated for 30–60 gallons and up to 800 GPH.
Extension Units include splitter cables, allowing the connected rollers to operate together through the Main Unit’s controller.
Three Buttons Keep Control Simple
The controller uses three buttons, with indicator LEDs showing its operating status:
- Mode: Switch between normal sensor operation, a long-delay mode, and an experimental timer mode. Long-delay mode requires the optical sensor to remain submerged for 11 minutes before advancing the fleece.
- Manual: Run the motor for as long as you hold the button.
- Pause: Press once to pause for 30 minutes, again for 12 hours, or a third time to resume normal operation immediately.
For most setups, normal sensor operation will handle everyday filtration. The pause function is especially useful during maintenance, letting you stop fleece advancement without unplugging the unit.
How Often Will You Replace the Fleece?
Thomas notes that an 82-foot roll typically lasts around two to four weeks. Actual roll life will depend on how much waste your aquarium produces and how much water passes through the filter.
Replacement rolls come in two-packs. With multiple rollers installed, plan on replacing fleece for each unit as needed.
