VCA NOSOK Filter Sock Replacement Kit | BRStv Product Spotlight
Mechanical filtration in a reef tank usually comes down to one big question: how much maintenance are you willing to deal with?
Filter socks work great, but you are constantly washing them. Filter cups are easier, but they can clog fast. Fleece rollers solve both problems, but they come with a much higher cost and added complexity. The Vivid Creative Aquatics (VCA) NOSOK lands right in the middle, giving reefers a simpler way to use filter floss without the constant sock laundry.
A Cleaner Alternative To Filter Socks
At a glance, the NOSOK is a filter sock replacement, but instead of fabric, it uses a removable core that you wrap with filter floss. Once wrapped, the core drops into the included cage and water flows through it much like a traditional sock.
When it gets dirty, there is no washing required. Just unwrap the used floss, toss it, and rewrap the core with a fresh layer. It is still manual mechanical filtration, but the process is faster, cleaner, and much easier than dealing with a pile of dirty filter socks.
More Surface Area Than A Filter Cup
The real difference comes down to how the NOSOK handles flow. Instead of pushing water through a flat pad like a standard filter cup, the NOSOK wraps filter floss around the entire core.
That gives the media more surface area, better flow distribution, and slower clogging. In practice, it performs much closer to the way a filter sock does, while still giving you the convenience of disposable filter floss.
The built-in nylon mesh screen also adds structure, acts as a coarse pre-filter, and helps keep everything flowing consistently.
Three Sizes For Different Reef Tanks
The NOSOK comes in three sizes to fit a variety of aquarium setups.
2.75" VCA NOSOK
Built for smaller filtration chambers and all-in-one systems like the Waterbox AIO and Deskmate aquariums.
4" VCA NOSOK
Standard sock replacement size for most reef tank sumps. Also compatible with Red Sea Reefer Aquarium filter sock holders.
7" VCA NOSOK
Ideal for larger systems where you want more capacity and longer service intervals between media changes.
Who Is The NOSOK Best For?
If you are already using filter floss and want something more efficient, the NOSOK makes a lot of sense. It gives you a more structured, higher-surface-area way to run floss compared to simply stuffing it into a cup or chamber.
It is also a great option if you are tired of washing socks but not ready to jump to a fleece roller. You are still swapping out media by hand, but in a faster and cleaner way.
The NOSOK is not trying to reinvent mechanical filtration. It just makes one of the most annoying parts of reefing a whole lot easier, and for a lot of reefers, that is a pretty solid upgrade.
