Quick Overview

Why does BRS recommend this?

The Digital Aquatics Reef Keeper Lite is a great little aquarium controller that makes programming very straight forward and easy.  The options are somewhat limited compared to other controllers on the market, however if you are looking for a simple, easy to use controller, with the availability to be expanded upon, the Reef Keeper Lite units are some of the best.

Digital Aquatics ReefKeeper Lite or RKL comes in 3 different levels. They are small expandable and perfect for nano tanks, beginners, and everyone looking for a mid level controller. ReefKeeper Lite's are easily the best value controllers on the market. See below for quick compare chart of the differences between each RKL.

ReefKeeper Lite Plus Features

  • Head Unit

  • 2 PB4 power bars (8 total outlets)

  • Digital Aquatics Temperature probe

  • ReefKeeper SLX pH and ORP Module(Inputs: pH, ORP, Temperature, and 2x Switch Ports)

Question by: Kirk ballinger on Jan 28, 2016 11:46:00 AM
Great question!
There is the SL2v2 salinity module available. Keep in mind you will need the Reef Keeper salinity probe as well. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Do the two PB4's that come with this unit count towards the 4 modules that the RKL supports?
Question by: Ben on Oct 2, 2016 5:55:00 AM
Hey Ben,
Yes, the two pb4 modules and slx count against the 4 module count. This kit will accept one additional module.

What do I need to add in order to monitor pH with a RKL?
Question by: Brandon Chapman on Jul 31, 2016 7:28:00 PM
Hi there,
To add pH monitoring you will need to purchase a pH probe along with the SLX module. That will allow you to connect the SLX to your RKL system and then connect the pH probe to the SLX module.
Thanks for the question and if you have any others let us know.

As I was watching another video on the Apex Controller he mentioned lab grade probes etc. Since I do have the RKL Plus I am wondering what the life expectancy is on the PH and ITemp probes? Is there a recommendation on when they should be replaced?
Question by: jeffrey castor on Jan 26, 2017 5:27:00 AM
Great question! Although there is no exact life expectancy for those probes, we typically change our probes for our tanks every 1yr - 1.5yrs. :-)

I would like to know if I could get the power bar RKM-PB4 in 220v.

Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Apr 25, 2016 6:48:00 PM
I'm planning on running 2 kissel 360 led lights. The controller that goes with them seems to have a large array of set up options. Would the Reef keeper also allow for the same set up functions as the kissel controller or does the Reef keeper only offer basic controls? Thanks
Question by: Roland on Jan 9, 2017 4:09:00 PM
Great question! You will be able to brighten/dim them as well as control the spectrum through the ALC module. You would also be able to program them to your desired lighting schedule. :-)
Answer by: Randy (Admin) on Jan 10, 2017 11:30:00 AM

Question by: Lincoln Case on Sep 24, 2016 6:22:00 AM
You sure can! Check our Ryan's video on that very topic! :-)

Does this include a pH probe? What is all that is included in this package?
Question by: Paul on Mar 13, 2016 11:20:00 PM
Great question!
This package will include the power controller x2, pH probe, iTemp Probe, SL1 module for pH control and the option to add on ORP. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Mar 15, 2016 11:11:00 AM
Do you know if reefkeeper will be able to control a diy Steve's led retrofit for a biocube? I have a typhoon controller on it right now.
Question by: Aaron on May 11, 2014 4:33:00 PM
Hi Aaron,
I am unfamiliar with that setup but so long as it has the ability to use a 0-10v input line to control the LED's themselves then you shouldn't have any problems with the reefkeeper, though keep in mind you need the ALC module.
Answer by: Bulk Reef Supply on May 11, 2014 4:33:00 PM
I want use this for control of the power heads but is TUNZE the only brand that is compatible?
Question by: Dan on Aug 30, 2014 1:22:00 AM
Hi Dan,

By using the APC module you will be able to connect Controllable Tunze pumps.
I am not aware of any other pumps supported by this module but it is possible that there have been adapters released to control other DC power heads.
I would also take a look at the ReefKeeper DCI DC Pump Interface. It may work for what you have in mind.

I am sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Have a great day :)

Would this be good to run on a 20 gallon reef?
Question by: Me on Oct 24, 2013 3:12:00 PM
Hey there,
I actually have a controller running on my 16g here at the office. Despite the size of the tank, there is just some equipment you never can really get away from like heater, timers, etc which really makes a controller a great choice for just about any size aquarium and it would be a great choice for your tank.

  • First controller experience By Bryan on 2/1/2017

I have not been in the reef community very long, but this is my first time using a controller. It does exactly what I need it to do as far as heaters and skimmer are concerned. I was not looking for a complete aquarium controller that managed every aspect of my tank. I did not want to put all my eggs in one basket so to speak but overall pleased with what I got with DA reefkeeper. I didnt give it 5 stars because I haven had experience with other controllers to say this is the best thing I have ever used.
  • Timers don't function and no support By Anna on 1/17/2017

I purchased this product due to the great review by BRS TV but it hasn't lived up. Couldn't get the PH to calibrate, can't get the timers to work - as soon as I set a timer, it shuts off the power to the channel. NO ONE answers or returns calls at Digital Aquatics. I SOOOOOOOO Wish I'd paid the extra for APEX. All I have is power strips and they're not even surge protectors!
  • I like it By Dave on 12/11/2016

I use it with the BRS dosers and 2 part, water pumps, lighting (tank and sump), heater, fan and pH probe. It's easy to program with the computer or the manual interface. My only regret is that I didn't get it before I bought a pH probe/meter and heater/controller. I could have saved money getting the Reef Keeper first. If you want to attain stable calcium/alkalinity measurements, a controller makes it much easier.
  • Will always have a controller on my tanks from now on... By Chris on 12/6/2016

For many years I was one of those guys with all of the timers and switches...everything "automated" in an old school fashion.

I finally decided to try one of these when they went on sale...very satisfied. I can't imagine setting up another tank without one now! Really cleans-up the setup and automates so many functions with one device. Programming both with PC and the pad interface are fairly intuitive and I found setup to be fairly straight forward.
  • NO CUSTOMER SERVICE!! By krazykelbs on 9/9/2016

I purchased this product in Jan 16' starting off doing manual programming was fine until I wanted to program off my personal computer, then the nightmares began! The software would load onto the computer but not recognize the controller. Called the customer support, 9 time out of 10 you will not get a live person, forced to leave message. The one time I was able to talk to a live person he directed me to the FAQ web page. After viewing the page I come to realize that I was not the only person with this type of problem, and apparently not very many people were able to get the problem worked out! I contacted BRS to see if anything could be done on their end, THEY(BRS) has outstanding customer service! BRS did about all that they could do and said they would also try and look into having someone contact me to help solve the problem. if you only have a light or two and maybe a pump to control this would work ok, but if your trying to control a bunch of different things. . .check into a different brand and spend more money. In the last 3 months I would say I have left 12-18 messages and way too many emails to count, with only 1 reply and no resolve to my issue.
  • Well worth the investment By Dan on 9/9/2016

I have had mine for around 7 months and absolutely love it. It was a little difficult to figure out at first but I downloaded the instructions of of their website and was able to figure it out. It has worked very well for me and I haven't had any issues with it.
  • Worth the money!! By Tyler on 4/21/2016

I first saw this controller on the BRS videos on how to start a saltwater tank. I was immediately sold just on the money saved by buying the controller and not timers! The biggest plus to having this controller is the amount of hassle it takes out of owning a reef tank.
  • Excellent value By JJ on 12/15/2015

This is a great system for the money. Highly satisfied. I did order additional power module to have total of 12 outlets. Very expandable and intuitive to use. Timer settings can get a little complicated but i think it is a necessary evil to be able accept complicated multiple timer programing. Fraction of the cost of Neptune system.
  • Good but you're controlling By Cartman on 11/15/2015

Good budget controller Manual That give us not the greatest but YouTube helps a lot . Good have a problem with my temperature probe but brs and Digital aquatics help me and sent a new one for me . Only wish u can add few more module to it it comes with 3 and u can only have 4 with the lite
  • Good product and service By Pablo on 11/8/2015

This is an excellent low-priced monitor and controller. The manual is poorly written, and that's why I'm giving it 4 points, otherwise very good. Bulk Reef Supply have an amazing service, quick delivery and everything easy, highly recommendable.
  • Happy By Ken on 10/2/2015

Need better instructions with device. Had to watch Youtube and BRS videos to get everything up and running and calibrated correctly. After getting all going it controls everything great. Still need to find how to control wavemakers for more run time.
  • Simply Amazing! By Steve on 6/26/2015

I love how easy this controller makes it to monitor your parameters and adjust settings. It makes controlling and running your tank and umpteen gadgets a breeze. It seems a little pricy up front but when you consider how many products it combines into one its totally worth it. It's also very user friendly to set it up and connect all your equipment to it.
