- OS-1 Optical Level Sensor V2 - Neptune Systems
Optical sensors are the go to sensor if you want a reliable sensor over a long period. The Neptune Optical Sensor plugs directly into the FMM allowing you to monitor the level of your sump, mixing station, or any other reservoir with liquid in it.
This sensor plugs into your FMM and, using reflected infrared light, will signal your Apex when it changes state from being wet to dry or dry to wet. This sensor can be used for constructing your own ATO (auto-top-off), as a high-level warning sensor in your sump, water storage level sensor, and much more. The sensors can be mounted into custom brackets or through a hole in a vessel. Included are a fastening nut and silicone washer.

Good little monitoring device. By James on 1/27/2020James would recommend this product to a friendI've had three for about two years now; two on the ATK and one measuring RODI water levels. One recently failed on the ATK but it did not cause any major issues and this replacement worked. If you have an FMM and want to monitor some water levels, I would give these sensors a try.
First 1 out of 6 failed in 2 years. By Victor on 12/12/2019Victor would recommend this product to a friendWanted to write an honest review as I have been using the Neptune ATK systems for a couple years with no issues. I added a frag tank about 6 months ago and had my first sensor failure. The bottom sensor failed and It went into alarm as intended. I also noticed that if you over-tighten the nut it can split at the flange. I will keep a spare now just in case I hit one while cleaning or removing my pump. For my needs, this has proven to be the best ATO system so far.
Failed after 6 months By Milto on 12/3/2019Milto wouldn't recommend this product to a friendFailed after 6 months.
Adds more labor to your tank. By Wade on 8/29/2019Wade wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI have two ATK units on two separate tanks and they both constantly fail. Sometimes multiple times in one day. Going back to Tunze.
ATO Optical sensor leaked and failed after 1 year. By Jared on 8/8/2019Jared wouldn't recommend this product to a friendOne of my 2 optical sensors started leaked and failing after a year
Trash By Atk sucks on 4/1/2019Atk sucks wouldn't recommend this product to a friendSensor fail eventually. Mines failed with 7 months and I been only using it with rodi water..
5 Fail in 6 months By tbraff on 1/26/2019tbraff wouldn't recommend this product to a friendThree different tanks and systems the optical senors leak and fail. I have over 5 units fail in different configs. But all fail in same way, seal leaks and fail. Neptune Systems say they have only heard of 1 failing, Well I have 5. (Fresh water) After loosing about $1000 in live stock over the whole time, im going to another brand controller and ditching this junk. NO I do NOT recommend !!
Not Reliable By Kevin on 9/27/2018Kevin wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI have used 2 different ones with my APEX and each one keeps saying closed when it's not. Often I see air bubbles blowing around my tank because the ATO or WC did not fill up correctly. I have to reset the apex a few times to get it to work again until the next week. This started happening 1 month after setting this up.
I now have to configure float switches because the whole point of the controller is so I don't have to manually turn these things on every day.
OS-1 Optical Level Sensor By vapor160 on 3/14/2018vapor160 would recommend this product to a friendworks exactly as advertised. hooked this up to my Apex and put this one in the refugium and it keeps the water level exactly where it needs to be
OS-1 Optical Level Sensor By vapor160 on 2/26/2018vapor160 would recommend this product to a friendWorks just like it says it will. easy to install and set up. Have it on my refugium and keeps the water level from getting too high.
Not Sure By Darrin on 7/18/2017Darrin would recommend this product to a friendIm not sure about these yet i got 2 and it can be 1in diff when it turns on and turns off in a 55gal sup. the float switches are not as reliable but they keep my ATO within 1/4inch. ive tried it side mount and up mount dont make a diff. 1in in a 55gal thank is a is alot of ATO water
Nice addition to the Neptune famaily of products! By chris on 6/8/2017chris would recommend this product to a friendI was very excited to get my hands on this sensor. I have it in my saltwater storage container as my trigger to stop my AWC system before my water level drops below the minimum operating level for the system. Great to not have only a float switch as my only option. Mounts great to the BRS 1" PVC cap for DIY mounting brackets.
Do these sensor comes with brackets or we need to make them .
Do you a picture of the bracket
This sensor does not include a mount at this time. The sensors can be mounted into custom brackets or through a hole in a vessel. If you have any other questions, let us know! : )
Do you think this would to monitor the level in a skimmer cup, if attached to the lid.
How long is the wire on this sensor?
This sensor has a 10' cable. If you have any other questions, let us know!
Is this the sensor for the DDR?
Yes they are the same optical eyes!
Follow up question - is there a way to extend the 10' cable if necessary?
While we don't currently have an option for extending the optical sensor cable, we do have Aquabus extension cables which would allow you to move the module closer to the source if needed.
Have a great day!
Do you know the size of the holes that it wil fit in. I'm trying to get a custom bracket made
The probe body is .5", so an installation hole size slightly greater than this will be fine. A 5/8" bit should make a properly sized hole.
Have a great day!
Will it only work with the FMM Module?
The Optical Sensor currently does require the FMM module to communicate with the Apex system.
Have a great day!
Can this be hooked into a DOS unit or will it only with with the FFM? Thanks!
Hope this helps!
Can these be cleaned and what would be the recommended method. Before I replace the ones in my ddr that got gunked up with a film from with a bad batch of calcium I'd like to know in case it ever happens again. Thanks!
These can easily be cleaned up with a short soak in a solution made from regular white vinegar or citric acid solution. Usually 30-40 minutes will get any deposits right off and then a quick rinse before re-installing!
Do these sensors work in the dark? Will my ATK work when we turn off the house lights at night?
Yes, they do work in the dark.
Please let us know if you need anything further and take care!
I just received the sensor and I was wondering if it is fully submersible, i.e. can I use it as low level sensor in the sump by just attaching it to the pump inside the sump, without drilling a hole in the glass? This way it will be fully submersed under 10" of water most of the time?
Have a great day!
You guys are saying that the OS-1 cannot be used to create a water tight seal in an ATO reservoir but the Neptune site says otherwise - can you confirm?
