Today on BRStv, we have a brand new episode of our series, BRStv Investigates. In this series, we explore popular reefing theories, products, methods, and what the manuals are missing, with a focus on putting them to the test! In this week's BRStv Investigates episode, we take a look at deionization resin and even if the TDS meter says 0 TDS, are all the contaminants really removed? First, a brief overview of how deionization resin works. Deionization resin has an electrical charge of either positive (cation) or negative (anion) that will attract similarly charged ions to the resin bead and exchange it for either a hydrogen or hydroxide ion. The exchange allows for the contaminants in the water to be "absorbed" to the resin that will eventually become exhausted. There are multiple types of deionization resin, from single bed to mixed beds that have color changing indicators of the cation or the anion, and depending on what is in your water you may not want the same resin that other people use. Measuring contaminants in water can be done in a few different ways, you can use a TDS meter or a conductivity meter. TDS meters are conductivity meters that have an algorithm built in to display a whole number where conductivity meters will give readings in micro Siemens. Both of the readings eventually end up giving you the same result, but TDS meter multipliers may change from manufacturer to manufacturer depending on the compounds being tested for. So you want to learn more about DI resin? Make sure to watch the video, as we will give a few tips to extend the life of your resin along with suggestions on how to save some money on DI resin too! *Legal Stuff* The purpose and content of this video is to provide general information regarding the products and their applications as presented in the video.
