- Bio-Actif Salt Mix - Tropic Marin
Contains Naturally Occurring Marine Biopolymers
Tropic Marin Bio-Actif Salt mix has been professionally designed to be used in reef tanks that employ some type of carbon dosing to create an Ultra-Low Nutrient System (UNLS). The unique salt incorporates bio-active marine agents that help protect and enhance your aquarium's fauna growth, leading to more vibrant and healthier corals. Healthy corals will naturally grow faster and are more robust, but Bio-Actif salt is great for fish too by increasing the protection against damage to mucous membranes, heightened sensitivity, and elevated mating activity.

We suggest starting with 1/2 Cups of Tropic Marin Bio-Actif Salt per 1 Gallon of RODI water. For the best results, the water should be circulating and at a temperature of 73-77 °F. Once the water is up to temperature and circulating, slowly adding the appropriate amount of salt will allow it to fully dissolve quickly without creating any concentrated areas where precipitation may occur. The freshly mixed solution may be slightly cloudy but will clear once it is added to the tank.
Important - Using conductivity with freshly mixed Bio-Actif saltwater will show about 10% low. It is recommended to use specific gravity for reading Tropic Marin Bio-Actif Salt.
When you have added almost all of the salt and the mixture is fully dissolved, start measuring the specific gravity with a refractometer or similar instrument. Keep adding small amounts of salt until the specific gravity is the value you desire. The specific gravity of the sea salt solution should range from 1.025 to 1.027 (at 73-77 °F / 23-25 °C) and the pH -value should be in the range of 8.0 – 8.4. If all parameters are correct, the salt water is ready to use.
Note: Slight cloudiness is normal at this stage and indicates that the bio-active substances are taking effect. Not recommended for Auto Water Change systems since after a couple days a film will develop on the reservoir.
Incredible Mix for Carbon Dosers or Ultra Low Nutrient Tanks By ReeferEddie on 3/3/2020ReeferEddie would recommend this product to a friendThis salt mixes, hands down better than any other than ESV and I've now tried them all over the course of 20 years. I used to use Tropic Marin but switched to this when I started carbon dosing. Ultra stable when mixed and can be stored. The brown "film" is bio active (bio-actif in German!) and SHOULD be there!! Use Tropic Marin Pro-Reef if not low nutrient/dosing carbon!
Great salt mix! By Daniel on 11/29/2019Daniel would recommend this product to a friendI have been using this salt for about 6 months and couldn't be happier. Corals responded after the first water change!! There are 3 things that are downsides but are manageable being the overall positives i've seen.
1. it does mix up a little cloudy, however the next day the tank is crystal clear. From what I understand its from the organic polymers.
2. it leaves a brown film that should be cleaned after every batch is mixed.
3. it must be used between 24-48 hours after mixing.
As stated, i find the benefits far greater than the negatives. mixing buckets should be cleaned regularly. However long term storage is an issue for those with auto water change systems.
Works Great Corals Love It! By LuchaReef on 5/30/2019LuchaReef would recommend this product to a friendMy experience with the Tropic Marin Bio-Actif salt mix has been positive. One pro tip on mixing the salt mix is taking your time adding the salt mix a little bit at a time rather than just pour the full amount of salt. I have found that adding the salt over the course of 10 minutes reduces the issue with precipitation or cloudy or murky water. I will admit that there is a bit of slight haziness to the water but that is due to the activation of the Actif biopolymers in this particular salt mix. Using a Sicce 2.0 does make quick work of fully dissolving the synthetic salt mix in my brute mixing container. Normally takes 15-20 minutes after my water changes that my main display is much clearer. Even more so than before the water change. The Acropora, Stylophora and other SPS respond positively and have better polyp extension as well. If you feel the haziness is too much for you use the Tropic Marin Pro Reef and add the Reef Actif to your liking. Also, Lou from Tropic Marin has a great video on youtube on tips on how to mix their salt as well. Voila! you are ready to enjoy your reef. Cheers!
not great By Arash on 2/3/2019Arash wouldn't recommend this product to a friendcorals don't seem to respond as well as they do to tropic marin reef salt. this salt mixes with a "oil slick". Also leaves behind a brown film, not a fan.
