Corals use a lot more than just the "big three" major elements. Potassium, iodine, strontium, boron, manganese, amino acids, and many other trace elements are all present in the seawater we aim to recreate in our homes. While they might only be there in relatively small amounts, they still play an important role in the normal biological processes for our tank inhabitants.

How Far Should You Take Dosing?

This is the biggest challenge. Many reefers can get by with simple calcium and alkalinity dosing paired with larger regular water changes. But for those looking to cut back on water changes or to simply get the most out of their corals, some sort of trace element dosing is going to enter the equation.

On one hand, you can test individual elements, identify what’s low, buy separate supplements, and build out a very detailed dosing routine. For some reefers, that level of control is exactly what they want. On the other hand, Korallen-Zucht Coral System offers a much simpler approach while maintaining many of the same benefits.

What Is Korallen-Zucht Coral System?

Korallen-Zucht Coral System is a four-part system designed to be used together in equal amounts. Instead of managing a large collection of individual trace element and amino acid supplements, Coral System groups a broad range of those compounds into four bottles with a simple, consistent dosing routine.

Each bottle has a slightly different focus, but they’re intended to work together as a complete system.

Coral System 1

What it is:
Coral System 1 contains a blend of trace elements including manganese, zinc, nickel, vanadium, and others.

What it does:

Coral System 2

What it is:
Coral System 2 includes elements such as boron, bromine, and strontium.

What it is:
Coral System 4 contains elements including potassium, iodine, and fluorine.

What it does:

A Quick Reality Check on Coral Coloration

These bottles aren't filled with magic and it’s important not to take the color associations too literally.

Adding Coral System 4 isn’t automatically going to turn a brown coral blue, and Coral System 2 isn’t going to suddenly make every coral in your tank pink.

Coral coloration is influenced by a long list of factors, including genetics, lighting, nutrient levels, flow, overall coral health, and tank stability.

The better way to think about Coral System is that it helps provide trace elements and nutritional compounds that could otherwise become limiting once the rest of the aquarium is already running well.

In other words, this isn’t where you should start if your reef tank is struggling.

If you're still getting alkalinity figured out, nutrients are completely out of control, or your lighting and flow aren’t where they should be, those issues should come first.

When Does Coral System Make Sense?

Coral System is best suited for established reef aquariums where the fundamentals are already under control.

That generally means:

• Calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium are stable
• Nutrient levels are reasonably consistent
• Lighting is appropriate for the corals you’re keeping
• Flow is adequate and well distributed
• The aquarium is stable overall

How to Dose Korallen-Zucht Coral System

One of the biggest advantages of Coral System is how straightforward the dosing is.

Korallen-Zucht recommends dosing:

5 mL of each Coral System bottle per 25 gallons of aquarium water once per week.

The dose is the same for all four bottles, which makes the routine easy to remember.

You can dose all four supplements manually once per week, or divide the weekly amount into smaller doses and automate them with dosing pumps.

What Coral System Does Not Replace

Coral System does not replace your normal calcium, alkalinity, or magnesium supplementation.

Do You Need to Run ZEOvit?

No.

Despite the Korallen-Zucht name, you do not need to be running the complete ZEOvit system to use Coral System.

In fact, that's actually one of the reasons Coral System exists; it helps reefers get the results KZ is known for without having to run the ZEOvit system.

Is Korallen-Zucht Coral System Right for Your Reef?

If calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium are already handled, your tank is stable, and you want to start covering some of the chemistry beyond the basics, Coral System is a pretty straightforward way to do it.

It won’t replace good husbandry, stable parameters, proper lighting, or adequate flow. It also won’t magically force your corals into specific colors.

But what it does offer is a simpler way to provide a broad mix of trace elements, amino acids, and other compounds without individually dosing a shelf full of separate products.
