Adaptive Reef's Hybrid Algae Reactor:
The Easiest Way to Grow Algae?
First seen at this year's ReefaPalooza show in Orlando, Kyle from Adaptive reef is here to talk about the new Blade Hybrid Algae Reactor. While algae reactors and refugiums have been around for a while, this one stands out for its thoughtful design and ease of use.
Designed to Fit Where Others Can't
With other mission-critical equipment in the sump, not every reef keeper has the space for a traditional refugium. This is where the Adaptive Reef Blade Hybrid Algae Reactor shines. It allows you to keep your natural algae export neatly contained while freeing up valuable sump real estate for other essential gear.
Its adaptability sets this reactor apart. Whether you're growing Chaetomorpha or turf algae, the reactor is built to support either method. You can run it as a macroalgae reactor for nutrient export or as a turf scrubber-style unit by encouraging denser, fast-growing nuisance algae to thrive in a controlled environment. Either way, the goal is simple: less algae in your display tank.
Included are two mounting options to suit a range of setups:
- 2.25" Stand: Use submerged for internal filtration.
- 10" Extension Legs: Raise the unit above water for external or above-sump installation.
Maintenance
One of the standout features is the removable algae basket, which makes harvesting algae quick and easy. Instead of reaching into your sump or dismantling equipment, just lift out the internal basket to remove accumulated algae. Whether you’re cultivating turf algae or chaeto, it’s a no-mess process that takes just seconds.
The sealed, compact design also helps eliminate light spill, which means you won’t be encouraging unwanted algae growth in other areas of your sump. Combined with quiet operation and a clean aesthetic, the Blade Hybrid Algae Reactor delivers equal parts form and function.
Powered by the AquaIllumination Blade Refugium LED
When designing these Hybrid Algae Reactors, Adaptive Reef decided there was no need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to lighting; the AI Blade Refugium was the obvious choice. With a low profile and IP66 water resistance, the AI Blade Refugium provides a horticultural spectrum of red and blue designed to optimize macroalgae growth.
Thanks to the built-in control via the MyAI or Mobius apps, you can set up custom schedules, making it easy to automate your reactor's photoperiod and set the light intensity. Alternatively, if you're a Neptune Systems Apex user, the Blade Refugium is compatible with the MXM module, so you can manage your lighting through the Apex Fusion app.
When Can You Get One?
Now that you know what makes the Hybrid Algae Reactor special, the big question is: when can you get it? Adaptive Reef expects to release the reactor in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for full details and launch info soon!
