When do we REALLY need to change out T5 bulbs? | BRStv Investigates
T5 Bulbs Still Play an Important Role in Reef Lighting
T5 lamps have remained a favorite in reef aquariums because they produce wide, even light coverage with very little shadowing. A look and result that is not easy to mimic using LED lights alone. That balanced spread makes them especially useful for growing coral across the entire tank, whether they are used on their own or paired with LEDs in a hybrid setup.
Over time, T5 bulbs gradually lose output and shift in spectrum, which is why replacing them on a schedule matters. Swapping lamps before performance drops too far helps maintain more consistent PAR, better color, and a more stable environment for your corals.
Recommended T5 Bulb Change Schedule
| Usage | Suggested Replacement | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy Daily Use 8-12 hours per day |
Every 9-12 Months | Best for reef tanks where you want to keep light output and spectrum as consistent as possible for coral growth and coloration. |
| Moderate Use 6-8 hours per day |
Every 12 Months | A solid rule of thumb for most reef keepers running T5s as a primary light source or in a hybrid fixture. |
| Supplemental or Hybrid Use Shorter daily photoperiod |
Every 12-18 Months | If the bulbs are mainly used to fill in shadowing or support LED lighting, they may last longer before needing replacement. |
| Noticeable Dimming or Color Shift | Replace Sooner If Needed | If the tank looks duller than usual or corals are not getting the same visual pop, it may be time for a fresh set of lamps. |
