Today on BRStv, we have a brand new episode of our series, BRStv Investigates. In this series, we explore popular reefing theories, products, methods, and what the manuals are missing, with a focus on putting them to the test! In this episode, we are putting refugium lights and chaetomorpha algae to the ultimate test in a real reef setting. We want to see if an appropriately sized refugium can help manage nutrients and also keep nuisance algae from growing in the display tank that are lit by a single Kessil A360WE LED light. As always we had our control tank, and then we lit the other three refugiums with a Kessil H380, Kessil H80, and a standard $5 compact fluorescent light that you can get at any local hardware store with a clip-on reflector. We then added equal sizes of chaeto algae to each refugium and let them grow. The display portion of our A/B test tanks housed cured live rock along with a couple of fish that we fed whole mysis shrimp for a real world setting. For results, we were not just looking at the growth of the algae since all of the lights have proved that they can grow chaeto, but can the refugium manage the growth of the algae and keep it all in the refugium where you want it to grow, and not in you display tank. The results were so compelling that our next test will be on a full blown reef tank, the BRS160! We are going to start the Triton System on the BRS160 along with a large refugium, seeing if the corals color can get even better than what it already is and if there are any notable changes in the tank overall from the KZ System the tank has been on for a couple of years now. If you want to see how we make the change over to the Triton Method, make sure to keep an eye out for future episodes of BRStv Investigates! *Legal Stuff* The purpose and content of this video is to provide general information regarding the products and their applications as presented in the video.
