How to Choose the Right RO/DI System
Choosing the right RO/DI system comes down to four things:
- Tap water source and what is in it
- How much water you need and how fast you want it
- How efficient you want the system to be
- Which built-in features and production rate make the most sense for your setup
This quick guide walks you through the same decision points reef hobbyists use every day so you can choose a system that fits your water source, routine, and tank size without overcomplicating it.
Choose Your Filtration Level
Start with the quality of your tap water, including relative cleanliness, TDS levels, and the presence of chloramines.
Choose Your Setup
Decide between a standard single membrane or a dual membrane Water Saver system.
Choose Your Features
Pick a standard model or upgrade to a Plus model for easier filter and performance monitoring.
Choose Your Output
Select the GPD that makes sense for your tank and water change routine.
Match the Number of Stages to Your Water
The number of stages determines how much filtration your water gets before it reaches your aquarium. In general, cleaner source water can use fewer stages, while tougher water calls for more protection and better DI efficiency.
- 4 Stage for city water with low chlorine or well water with low contaminants under 100 TDS and no chloramines
- 5 Stage for chlorine or chloramine-treated tap water and is the best "universal" fit. This is our most popular RO/DI system.
- 6 Stage for chlorine or chloramine-treated tap water with a dual DI stage upgrade, meaning longer DI resin life and more time between resin changes. Uses convenient mixed bed DI resin.
- 7 Stage for chlorine or chloramine-treated tap water, including high dissolved CO2. Uses the Pro Series 3 Stage DI Resin for maximum DI efficiency. Best for tap water sources that quickly exhaust standard mixed bed DI resin.
Pick Single Membrane or Water Saver
Once you know how many stages you need, the next question is whether you want a simpler setup or faster production with better water efficiency.
Single Membrane
If you do not mind a slower production rate and a higher waste-to-product water ratio, a single membrane system is a great fit.
Dual Membrane Water Saver
Best if you make water often and want faster production, more gallons per day, and a lower waste-to-product water ratio.
Decide if a Plus Model Is Worth It
Plus models include built-in tools that make it easier to monitor performance and maintain the system over time.
- Pressure Gauge to monitor incoming pressure
- Manual Flush Valve to help extend RO membrane life
- Inline TDS Meter to check TDS after the membrane and final product water
All of the Plus model RO/DI systems are highly recommended. They come completely assembled and allow you to properly connect and monitor your RO/DI system right out of the box for just a small difference in cost.
Choose the Right Gallons Per Day (GPD) / Production Rate
Gallons per day tells you how much water the membrane can produce under ideal conditions.
- 75 GPD for smaller tanks and lighter weekly use. Will make approximately 3 gallons of filtered water and approximately 9 gallons of waste water per hour.
- 100 GPD for moderate demand and less waiting. Will make approximately 4 gallons of filtered water and approximately 12 gallons of waste water per hour.
- 150 GPD Water Saver for larger systems, bigger water changes, or frequent use. Will make approximately 6 gallons of filtered water and approximately 9 gallons of waste water per hour.
- 200 GPD Water Saver for larger systems, bigger water changes, or frequent use. Will make approximately 8 gallons of filtered water and approximately 12 gallons of waste water per hour.
Above flow ratings are only estimates based on optimal conditions. Actual production rates fluctuate and are affected by low water pressure, cold temperatures, and clogged prefilters.
Booster Pump Upgrade
A booster pump is especially helpful if you want to get the best production speed and efficiency from a dual membrane Water Saver system. If your incoming water pressure is below 50 PSI, it can help improve output, rejection rate, and overall system performance.

Attach a drinking water faucet to your RO/DI system for clean, healthy drinking water on demand.
Shop NowBest Place To Start
If you are really just not sure where to begin, a 5 stage system is usually the safest place to start. It is the most popular option because it balances price, performance, and compatibility with chlorine- and chloramine-treated city water which is pretty common throughout the United States.
If you want to reduce wastewater and prodcue water faster, go with the water saver. Our RO/DI systems are all "modular" so should the need arise, you can always upgrade and add additional DI resin stages, booster pump, drinking water kits and flush valves down the road.
Recommended Systems by Need
4 Stage Value Plus 75GPD RO/DI System
A great fit for hobbyists with relatively clean source water who want a dependable, affordable way to make RO/DI water at home.
- Best for low chlorine city water or low-contaminant well water
- Portable, simple layout
- Includes Plus model upgrades for easier monitoring
5 Stage Premium Plus 75 GPD RO/DI System
The best all-around recommendation for most reef keepers and the easiest place to start if you have typical city water and want strong performance without overthinking it.
- Handles chlorine and chloramine-treated city water
- Balanced price and performance
- Best fit for most hobbyists
6 Stage Deluxe Plus 75 GPD RO/DI System
If you want more life from your DI resin and fewer cartridge swaps, the extra DI stage makes this a smart upgrade over a 5 stage system.
- Second DI stage helps extend resin life
- Great for hobbyists making water regularly
- Consistent 0 TDS output with longer service intervals
7 Stage PRO Plus 75 GPD RO/DI System
The top recommendation for difficult source water and hobbyists who want the most advanced DI configuration available.
- Triple DI stages for maximum resin efficiency
- Ideal for high dissolved CO2 and demanding water conditions
- Lets you replace only the resin type that is exhausted
