Choosing The Right Substrate
Bora Sand
The Bora variety of Controsand is an extra fine sand containing a mixture of lighter tones that is perfect for highlighting vibrant aquatic plants, tropical livestock, and darker layout materials. Bora is ideal for a wide variety of popular aquascaping styles.
Kona Gravel
The Kona variety of Controsand is a rounded pebble gravel designed for freshwater aquarium use. Kona’s deeper tones can be used as a supporting feature or to create excellent contrast. Like other Controsands, Kona can be used alone or mixed with other substrates for a custom look in planted tanks, terrariums, paludariums and more.
Mojave Sand
The Mojave variety of Controsand is an extra fine sand containing a mixture of warmer tones. Mojave is ideal for creating natural scenes and compliments Dragon Stone and driftwood nicely. Both Controsand Extra Fine and Normal may be used on their own. However, mixing both can completely transform the look of an aquarium.
Controsoil (Brown or Black)
Choosing a quality substrate is an essential part of a planted aquarium as it provides vital nutrients for lush plant growth and helps balance water parameters. Over time, it stabilizes pH levels to around 6.8, making it ideal for most tropical fish and shrimp that prefer slightly acidic water.
Originating in Japan, Ultum Nature Systems Controsoil consists of high-quality natural soil and volcanic ash. Controsoil provides the perfect level of nutrients without excess. It can be used alone or capped with other substrates such as UNS Controsand.
Choosing The Right Hardscapes
Spider Wood
Spiderwood, also known as Azalea wood or Manzanita wood, is sought after in aquariums for its aesthetic appeal and functional advantages. Its intricate branching structure and unique shapes add natural beauty to tank landscapes while offering hiding places and shelter for small fish, shrimp, and other aquatic inhabitants. Like cholla wood, spiderwood's porous surface encourages the growth of beneficial biofilm, enriching the aquarium ecosystem. While not as potent as cholla wood, spiderwood can release tannins, contributing to a slight reduction in pH and softening of water, which can benefit certain species. Additionally, spiderwood is durable and resistant to decay, making it a long-lasting addition to aquarium setups. Overall, spiderwood is prized for its ornamental qualities and its ability to enhance the habitat and well-being of aquarium dwellers.
Black River Rock
River rock is a favored choice for aquarium enthusiasts due to its aesthetic appeal and practical benefits. Its smooth and rounded appearance mimics the natural riverbed, creating a visually pleasing environment within the tank. River rocks provide excellent hiding places and shelter for small fish, shrimp, and other aquatic creatures, promoting a sense of security in the aquarium habitat. Moreover, river rock is inert and does not significantly affect water parameters, making it suitable for a wide range of aquarium setups. Its inert nature also ensures that it won't alter the pH or hardness of the water, providing stability to the aquatic environment. Additionally, river rock is durable and easy to clean, making it a low-maintenance option for aquarists.
Cholla Wood
Cholla wood is a favored choice in aquariums for its aesthetic appeal and functional benefits. Its natural look enhances tank décor while offering shelter and hiding spots for small fish and shrimp. The wood's porous nature fosters biofilm growth, providing a food source for aquatic organisms and contributing to a healthier ecosystem. Additionally, cholla wood can release tannins, which may lower pH and soften water, benefiting species preferring acidic, soft water conditions. Moreover, it serves as a natural chew toy, promoting dental health for certain aquarium inhabitants. Overall, cholla wood is a versatile addition, balancing aesthetics with practical advantages in aquarium environments.
Botanicals (Betta Tropical Bark, Lotus Pods, Alder Cones)
Alder cones, lotus pods, and betta tropical bark are popular additions to aquariums for their natural aesthetics and beneficial properties. These botanicals not only enhance the visual appeal of the tank but also release tannins and other organic compounds, creating a more natural environment and potentially offering health benefits to certain fish species.
The Maxspect Dice Series Pico Cube Aquarium combines elegance, functionality, and ease of maintenance to provide enthusiasts with a captivating aquatic experience. Whether you're a seasoned hobbyist or a beginner looking to explore the wonders of underwater life, this aquarium is sure to be a worthy addition to your collection. With the included filtration, dual heaters, and lighting you'll only need to decide which hardscape materials look and fit your tank style best.
