- Omega 200i Protein Skimmer - Vertex
Why does BRS recommend this?
The Vertex Omega skimmer is one of the nicest skimmers you can find in or out of its price range for a tank up to 200 gallons. We use the Omega line of skimmers on a few different tanks around BRS and find them to work really well, and at the same time looking nicer than almost all others on the market.
Building on the designs of the Vertex Omega 130 and 150 Protein Skimmers, the Vertex Omega 200i has a powerful Askol V-200i motor inside the skimmer body. The motor can also be mounted outside of the skimmer body with a custom mount. The wine bottle body shape with solid construction, Askol pump, pinwheel impeller, custom volute and pump head, titanium screws, ozone port and silicone coupler.

EXPENSIVE PIECE OF JUNK By Greg on 11/16/2018Greg wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI bought this skimmer a few years ago thinking I was spending my hard earned money on a well built product that would help take my tank to the next level. Unfortunately, what I purchased was an expensive piece of junk. I have this on a heavily stocked 125 mixed reef. This skimmer fails to do the one job it was designed to due. IT DOESN'T SKIM! I have tried everything and anything to get this skimmer to produce. It constantly over flows, or fails to produce foam. Doesn't matter how you tune it. Doesn't matter how deep or shallow you have it. It just sits there looking stupid! Vertex support is non existent. Nothing but excuses, and a blame game. Read all the other reviews, they all say the same thing. It's JUNK! All of the reviews stating the same thing tells me it's a design issue. Good luck getting them to own that. The only way I have had any success ( if you call this success) with this skimmer is to unscrew the collection cup and set it cocked in the opening so half of the foam can overflow back into the sump. WHAT A JOKE! I finally decided to replace it with a better skimmer. I am going to throw it in the trash where it belongs. I wouldn't even think of trying to sell it to some one, I couldn't sleep at night knowing I pushed this piece of garbage off on some one else just to recoup some of the $700 on wasted on this skimmer.
Garbage By Kmadd on 5/25/2018Kmadd wouldn't recommend this product to a friendVirtually impossible to tune, constantly floods regardless of constant monitoring. Flooding never fails!!
Excellent Skimmer By Will on 5/18/2017Will would recommend this product to a friendI have had fantastic results with this skimmer. I have it as part of a Supra sump setup and it performs spectacularly well on a 275 gallon SPS system running Aquaforest.
The skimmer is very sensitive to water level, and will ONLY operate correctly with between 7 and 9 inches of water in the sump. Over that and it continuously overflowed no matter what I did. The Supra (no surprise) is designed to operate with the skimmer compartment at that level, so it's great.
- Very quiet, almost silent, operation
- High quality build construction
- Easy to clean
- Easy to adjust
Worst skimmer I've ever owned By Prdnblk on 4/25/2017Prdnblk wouldn't recommend this product to a friendThis skimmer is bad I've had it for 6 months and it constantly floods my cabinet and floors , you can probably find a better skimmer at a lower price , don't waist your time on this product
Dont buy this is you want your sanity By vdigiorgio on 1/16/2017vdigiorgio wouldn't recommend this product to a friendIts def the worst skimmer I've ever owned.. constant overflowing, the hardest by far to dial in..
ive had it for months and its just be the same thing every week.. save your money and your sanity.
DO NOT BUY THIS SKIMMER By Will on 6/11/2016Will wouldn't recommend this product to a friendFirst off I love BRS but they need to contact vertex about the issues with this skimmer, I have had it running for over three weeks and it has not yet created skimmate not even a foam head. There are a lot of people with the same problem that the skimmer will not create a foam head. I have contacted vertex and not heard back yet, this is incredibly frustrating due to the fact I just spent 650 on this thing and is basically worthless at this point. I have had the vertex omega 130 and have to say its the best skimmer I have used but this is embarrassing for vertex and they obviously have not fixed the problems. Just look online and people have had nothing but issues.
Awesome skimmer By Jim on 10/18/2015Jim would recommend this product to a friendbest money I have spent.
Go smaller or go Alpha By Nick on 2/11/2015Nick wouldn't recommend this product to a friendAfter 2 weeks the skimmer does not produce ANY foam or skim in an established 200G SPS system. Vertex was contacted and the only thing they offered was for me to ship them the skimmer so they can inspect it and let me know. Do some searching online, the 180 and 150 are great, and you can't deny the alpha's, but do yourself a favor and go bigger or go smaller.
Noisy Pump? By Ben on 1/17/2015Ben wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI want to really like this Protein Skimmer, build quality is very impressive, easy to set up as well... dialing in takes quite some time, but once it is, it pulls some nasty gunk. My only complaint is the pump, which I was told is a Red Dragon pump, supposed to be some of the quietest pumps in the industry, not the case here. Maybe mine is defective, but it almost sounds as if the pump is grinding, and its intermittent, some times I can't here it at all, which is what I would expect for a $650.00 protein skimmer, but about 60% of the time, its driving me nuts with how loud it is. Going to contact BRS to see if they have any advice, will update my review if this gets resolved.
Easy to install and well written instructions By Ray on 12/21/2014Ray would recommend this product to a friendI received my first Vertex Omega 200i, and installed it and had a grinding sound coming from the pump. I called BRS and told them the problem, they were great to work with and issued return labels and in about a week I received my second Vertex Omega 200i. It is easy to assemble and adjust. My skimmer adjustment period was about 4 days with adjustments made about twice a day to finally get it skimming well. My only complaint is that the pump makes more noise than my previous Reef Dynamics180 skimmer and produces more heat. Its important to have the proper water level in your sump for easy calibration of skimmer. This is a well built and heavy skimmer. The bubbles this skimmer makes is unreal. Small footprint for this size skimmer.
Professional Grade By Arrick on 12/20/2014Arrick would recommend this product to a friendI recently purchased this skimmer during the black Friday sale and was immediately impressed with the build quality. I've heard many reviews of vertex products and how they feel well built when you touch it but until now didn't really know what it meant. Basically it doesn't feel like a toy feels like it was built to last 20 years and best of all its dead silent. The only issue I've had is the breaking this skimmer in has been a maddening process but the skimmer is in a class all its own.
