Quick Overview

Why does BRS recommend this?

Having a refractometer is one thing, but knowing that it is giving correct readings is even more important.  For not much money at all, refractometer calibration solution doesn’t take any time to use, and works with all digital and sight type refractometers to calibrate or double check readings at 35ppt (1.026sg).

Aqua Craft Salinity Calibration Fluid calibrates to sg 1.026 or 35ppt.

  • Dont test salinity without it! By Phys on 11/8/2017

Works exactly how its supposed to. With as much variation there is in refractometers, you NEED to calibrate to have accurate salinity. I've seen them off as far as 0.005 or more, which means you could be as high as 1.030 when you want to be 1.025. Let the salinity drift with evaporation and you could easily get to 1.035... moving into dangerous levels for smaller tanks.
  • Perfect results By Ken on 5/17/2017

This is what you need to be sure about your refractometer
  • Must have By Bdog on 4/13/2017

I've spent over 20 grand on my tank so not gonna complain about 7 bucks for seawater and a piece of mind
  • Does what it claims! By George on 3/9/2017

at first i was getting mad that i was getting the same reading between this and my tank water but then i ran the test on tap water... it dropped to zero.....then i used tank water and it went up to 1.026 so I pretty much had the same level as you would calibrate the refractometer to.
  • Pricey but works well By Jay on 3/7/2017

Could be a bit cheaper IMO but it is what it is
  • It Works By Dennis on 2/5/2017

    It works as expected.
  • Low Cost and Effective By Patrick on 2/4/2017

Great stuff. Very cheap, does what it says on the bottle. Got a bottle when I ordered my BRS refractometer, ordering another bottle as I'm all out.
  • Works well By astrophys on 1/28/2017

Does what it's supposed to! if you calibrate from zero, you'll often get imprecise measurements. This calibrates it to the spot you'll be reading from. Easy to use, one or two drops is all you need.
  • Excellent product! By Carmen on 12/24/2016

    Highly accurate.
  • Good but messy By Aaron on 11/25/2016

I bought this, like everyone else does, to verify my refractometers calibration.

After having calibrated it with RO/DI I was shocked to see that it was off. Certainly this is a good investment to make sure your equipment is giving you the right readings.

My only problem with it is that it is messy. The bottle has a dropper cap to allow you to add only a few drops of the solution at a time. The problem is the dropper cap is loose and when the bottle is squeezed, even with the lightest pressure, the solution dribbles out of the sides of he cap.

The bottle is big and has plenty of fluid but it does make calibration time a bit messy. Certainly this is not a varsity level applicator. I will not buy the brand again.
  • Must have item By Dan on 9/4/2016

Always a good idea to calibrate the refractometer occasionally. This is handy and more accurate than trying to mix my own calibration fluid.
  • Does the job By Fred on 5/1/2016

This fluid is what it's supposed to be. Not too difficult to explain. The benefit of having it tho, is that your refractometer (analog or digital) will always be on point. Calibration from 0 with RO water isn't that accurate. Even the best test equipment is useless without a standard to calibrate with or compare against. For the hundreds and thousands of dollars that go into having a tank, less than $10 for this fluid is a more than justifiable purchase.

Product Questions

Is this fluid good to use for the Milwaukee brand refractometer?
Question by: Mark Shimala on Jun 4, 2016 7:15:00 PM
Great question!
This certainly can be used to double check the Milwaukee refractometer. You will want to use RODI or distilled water to calibrate the refractometer, but you can always use the Aqua Craft Calibration solution to reference the reading to 1.026 sg.
