Quick Stats
Chalice corals are colorful LPS corals known for their bold patterns and encrusting or plating growth. Depending on the variety, they may display vivid greens, reds, oranges, blues, and purples, often with striking color combinations that become more pronounced as the coral settles in and grows.
Most chalice corals prefer lower light and gentle to moderate flow, making them a good option for lower areas of the rockwork. They are generally slow to moderate growers and benefit from stable water conditions, careful placement, and enough space to avoid contact with neighboring corals.
Note: This 5-pack includes five different chalice coral frags selected by Eye Catching Coral. Each pack is chosen to provide a mix of colors and patterns, but specific varieties cannot be guaranteed. Coral selection will vary based on current availability, making every pack a little different.
Water Parameters
Corals thrive in stable water conditions with regular water changes. Corals with a hard skeleton will consume calcium and alkalinity as they grow, often requiring additional supplementation. Routine water testing helps ensure these needs are consistently met.
- Specific Gravity (Salinity): 1.025-1.026
- Temperature: 75-78°F
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Alkalinity: 8-9.5 dKH
- Calcium: 400-450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1300-1450 ppm
- Nitrate (NO3): 10-25 ppm
- Phosphate: 0.01-0.1 ppm
- Nitrite (NO2): Undetectable
- Ammonia (NH3): Undetectable
Lighting Requirements
Most chalice corals prefer low to moderate lighting, ideally in the 75-150 PAR range with many types preferring the lower end of that range.
For those with mixed reef tanks, a PAR meter is an invaluable tool for fine-tuning lighting, helping ensure each coral gets the right intensity to thrive.
Ideal Tank Placement
Chalice corals are most often placed lower on the rockwork, sometimes even in slightly shaded areas.
Water Flow Requirements
Low to moderate flow is ideal. This helps remove debris from the coral’s surface without irritating the tissue.
Aggressiveness and Compatibility
Chalice corals are generally semi-aggressive and should not be placed where they're in direct contact with neighboring corals. Many chalice corals can extend sweeper tentacles at night, so provide ample space.
Feeding and Nutrition
Chalice corals primarily rely on photosynthesis for energy, but they can benefit from occasional feeding with coral foods and supplemental amino acid dosing to enhance growth and coloration.
Growth Rate and Pattern
Chalice corals have a slow to moderate growth rate. Depending on the type of chalice, they may have an encrusting or plating growth pattern.
Acclimation Process
Acclimation is essential for corals to adjust to their new environment. For a full step-by-step process, refer to our Coral Acclimation Guide.
