Chaetomorpha, commonly known as Chaeto, is one of the most popular macroalgae choices for reef tank refugiums. Its dense, green, fibrous structure allows it to absorb excess nutrients from the water, such as nitrates and phosphates, helping to maintain better water quality in your tank. Due to its rapid growth and ease of care, Chaeto is often the go-to solution for aquarists looking for a natural way to manage nutrients without the need for complicated equipment.

Eye Catching Coral makes every effort to provide clean, healthy macroalgae, but it is not guaranteed to be hitchhiker-free. Like most macroalgae in the reefing hobby, it may occasionally include small hitchhikers. A visual inspection before adding it to your aquarium is recommended.

How to Set up a Refugium Using Chaeto

Setting up a refugium with Chaetomorpha is a simple yet effective way to improve the health and stability of your aquarium. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get your Chaeto refugium up and running:

  1. Choose the Right Space: A dedicated refugium chamber or macro algae reactor is ideal for housing your Chaeto. If using a sump, make sure the section is isolated from your main filtration to prevent clogging the surrounding equipment.

  2. Install Adequate Lighting: Chaeto thrives under moderate to high lighting. A refugium light designed specifically for macroalgae growth or a full spectrum freshwater planted aquarium light are both great choices. We usually recommend setting your refugium lights to come on oposite of your main display. This will help reduce the aquarium's natural pH swing from day to night.

  3. Maintain Proper Flow: Chaeto benefits from consistent water movement to prevent detritus buildup. Tumbling the Macro Algae is a popular goal, but in our experience, it isn't necessary.

  4. Monitor Nutrient Levels: Once your Chaeto refugium is established, it will naturally begin absorbing excess nutrients like nitrates and phosphates. Regularly test your water to monitor the nutrient levels. If your refugium is working too well, consider reducing the amount of time the refugium light is on.

  5. Harvest Regularly: Chaeto grows quickly. When your refugium is looking full, simply grab a handful of Chaeto and remove it from your refugium.
