Designed for use with the Somatic 60 Filtration System.
Many protein skimmers can be twice the price but only have half the features. Somatic has created a budget friendly skimmer that does not leave you disappointed. Many of the little features that are only found on high-end skimmers are incorporated into the 60S Space Saving Skimmer. From laser engraved markings on the wedge pipe to polished and fully welded seams all around. The integrated silencer sits in the top of the wedge pipe keeping it protected and out of your way for maintenance around the sump area. The silencer also has a nipple that can be connected to CO2 Scrubbers or other accessories.
The custom Sicce pump was specifically designed for Somatic skimmers, to their specifications. The pumps impeller and venturi design pull in copious amounts of water and air, mixing them together and pushing them up towards the dispersion bubble plate. The bubble plate considerably reduces turbulence while the wine body shape of the skimmer helps remove any further disturbance of bubbles directing them up into the neck and making a seamless transition into the collection cup producing high-quality skimmate.

This is the LOUDEST skimmer I've ever heard. By Turtle on 10/19/2019Turtle wouldn't recommend this product to a friendFirst off, I wasn't thrilled with metal screws inside the body of the pump. Sounds like trouble to me. Id's rather have a teflon screw. Once in the tank and turned on, the noise from the air inlet was OBNOXIOUSLY loud. This thing sounds like a diesel truck idling under my tank. After a few days, the hum from the pump's motor is so loud I can hear it outside of my fish room. I can hear is all the way down the hall in my bedroom. Stay away from this skimmer, it's junk.
Great skimmer at an unbelievable price! By Evan on 7/31/2019Evan would recommend this product to a friendI do not often write reviews, but I feel this skimmer deserves it...The skimmer was mostly assembled. I took the skimmer apart and applied molykote to all the orings to make disassembly easier in the future and prolong the life of the seals; also the volute went on so much easier. I found out quickly that something was not right. When I put it all together I failed to notice the top and bottom bubble plates have a blank area with no holes, the top plate has the blank area over the inlet to prevent the pump from pulling back in the bubbles (which causes it to overflow like crazy, which is something I don't think a lot of people discovered from reading pleas of help on forums before I purchased this product). The second plate is designed in such a way that it wont allow bubbles back in the sump if installed correctly (another complaint I read).
Build quality is great, wayyyyyyy better than reef octopus 150 by far.
Pump is very quiet.
The only negative thus far would be the noise from the air silencer, but any reefer worth a grain of salt can easily remedy this with foam, tubing, glue, and and an empty canister (like a pill bottle or film container). I would take a noisy air draw over a loud pump any-day, I am looking at you Reef Octopus.
The foot print is 9x9, using Pythagorean Theorem I determined this would fit in my sump which is 10.25 x 8.5. I calculated the diagonal measurement then sketched out the body of 6 inches, then added 3 inches for the volute at the 12 o' clock position and three inches at the 3 o'clock position.
AMAZING By Scooter on 4/14/2019Scooter would recommend this product to a friendFirst off, read the instructions, put it in the proper amount of water. This was beneath the stand on my 40B and I couldnt hear it outside of the stand. Like the other reviews I had the impeller chip as well ( this was due to a snail, I found small snails in the intake all the time until i put a cover over it ) called brs up and there was no fuss process and a week later I had a new impeller. I even ran this temporarily on my 300g system and it performed surprisingly well.
If you're on the fence about this skimmer pull the trigger, you wont be disappointed.
Not dependable By Jason on 10/25/2018Jason wouldn't recommend this product to a friendWorked great for about 3 months. Then the skimmer pump stopped pumping. Took it apart to see what was wrong and saw that the shaft/impeller was just broken in half. There's no way to replace the pump from what I can tell because it's integrated into the bottom plate of the skimmer. Poor design and poor quality pump.
Works, very noisy By Tom on 6/28/2018Tom wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI chose this skimmer because of limited sumps space. Having the pump inside was the factor. When I first installed it and turned it on, the noisy from the air inlet tube was pretty obnoxious. I immediately found a piece of PVC the same diameter as the control tube where the air hose terminates and attached it with a piece of packing tape wrapped all the way around. I then stuffed a rolled up piece of kitchen towel into the PVC to quiet the noise. That helped. It is still the noisiest part of my 29 gal system. I'm going to put it on a timer so that it only runs after I go to bed. It does work well as a skimmer.
Kind of a headache By Lucas on 6/4/2018Lucas wouldn't recommend this product to a friendThe skimmer was working well and pulling a lot of junk. After three months the impeller chipped. I was able to get one within a week customer service was good. Two weeks later impeller chipped again. This time I waited over a month for it and was ignored for two weeks. Also paid the the second impeller. I parted ways with the skimmer and somatic. Have a back up skimmer on deck if you buy this product.
good skimmer By Me on 4/23/2018Me would recommend this product to a friendthe skimmer is nice, excellent quality, it skims good, but it is sorta loud and sometimes it dumps tons on microbubbles into the sump.
Almost perfect but..... By Brian on 3/24/2018Brian wouldn't recommend this product to a friendHas potential but it has a major flaw in that the bubble plate is held on to a rod with a screw but then a friction fit to the plate attached to the pump. On mine this fit was to loose and every time the skimmer turns on it is blown off. All it needs is a screw or some glue but its going back again. See video.
The best customer service ever By dan on 3/23/2018dan would recommend this product to a friendThis thing is a beast. Had a bit of a problem with the impeller. After talking to vertex I had a new impeller in 2 days. Excellent customer service for a small purchase.
The build quality is outstanding. You can’t go wrong here.
Nothing Like it on the market! By Cass on 12/7/2017Cass would recommend this product to a friendA beast! Got it during Black Friday sale here on BRS for $159.99. Incredible! Check out my video review. Broken in in the very first day!! The air intake is VERY loud, but very easy to solve: Run a airtime like to the outside of your house from the there and there is zero noise left. Built like a tank, it really is basically an Omega 130 in a space saver design and built with nicer looking colors. Transparent Black (very thick) acrylic. I Bough the Omega 130 from BRS, but had to send it back because it did not fit my sump. So can surely compare the quality build of these two. ONE complain that I do have is how the pump is attached to the body: Glued! That is BS, they should have added four titanium screws to the bottom of the skimmer. But, that will not affect the functionality and it would only be an issue if the pump needed to be replaced.
Excellent build quality. By Dogsrule on 6/25/2017Dogsrule would recommend this product to a friendI was really impressed just with the packaging this thing comes in. The build quality of the skimmer is 1st class, with no obvious corners being cut. The assembly instructions are non- existent (at least with my purchase), but BRS has the assembly video linked. I broke the skimmer in by giving it a quick rinse, then running it in a container of dirty water change water, with contents of previous skimmer collection cup added to it. Within a couple of hours, it was really cranking. Placed in sump & spent a little time dialing it in to get the desired foam production without dumping micro bubbles back into the sump. I am really impressed with this skimmer & I think it could easily handle a fully stocked 120G tank.
Would not hesitate to recommend this skimmer
Excellent, but air inlet is noisy. By T-Ball on 6/6/2017T-Ball would recommend this product to a friendThis skimmer is replacing a bubble magus curve 7. Pulling skim like crazy in less than 24 hour's. took a while to find the sweet spot as far as water depth. I have it @ 7". The air valve that comes with it is a must unless you raise it to 5-6 inches of water. This skimmer is wayyy under rated by manufacturer from what I can tell. I would say 100 gallon heavy bioload easily, maybe more. Super excited to see what it does when it's fully broken in. First 16 hours, micro bubbles like crazy, but it's calming down. Air inlet is pretty noisy, but not unbearable. Quality is excellent, especially for $199.
