- Reefer 170 System (34 Gal) - Red Sea
This item ships directly from Red Sea.
Going from the top of the Reefer system down to the bottom, the first thing you will notice is the crystal clear glass and elegant beveled edges. The second thing you may or may not notice is the slim overflow that houses all the drain and return plumbing to keep the water a constant level within the display tank and surface skimming while being super quiet and taking up a very small amount of real estate inside of the tank. The return nozzle is fully adjustable for to direct the flow where you need it, and the dual drain system keeps overflows from happening like a single drain design may encounter. The dual drain design has one main drain that includes a diaphragm valve for easy tuning and adjustments. The other drain is completely open to flow directly down into the sump in the event that the main drain gets clogged. If plumbing is one of the reasons why you have never wanted to install a tank with a sump don’t worry as Red Sea has done all the planning for you and there is no gluing needed to assemble and seal all the plumbing.
The sump includes a filter sock holder and sock to keep large pieces of debris and detritus from clogging pumps and other pieces of equipment. The water can then flow from the filter sock into the skimmer compartment where the water will keep a steady level to aid in the best performance in your choice of skimmer or any other filtration components that you choose to include can be placed there. The water will then flow through the final bubble trap and into the final chamber where the return pump (not included) can be placed to pump water back through the Reefer tanks return plumbing.
Integrated Top Off
When water starts to evaporate all Reefer systems include an integrated top off system and reservoir that can hold a few days worth of top off water to keep the water level, salinity and flow rates consistent throughout the tank.

Well thought out system By Derek on 3/22/2020Derek would recommend this product to a friendI have been reefing for about 10 years and and this is my first "package" system. This mixed reef is located in my home office so a quiet system is a must. Equipment I am using:
Varios 2 return pump - very quiet - one thing to note, for the step down barb fitting you have to glue the two barb fittings together
Tunze ATO (not the nano version). I am using a 7 gallon ATO container rather than the small one that comes with the tank. I have two other tanks w/ the Tunze ATO and was not comfortable with the gravity feed system and size of the one that came with the tank.
Two Eheim Jager 100W heaters
Apex JR, EB8, PM1, XMR (may have to hook up to other apex if won't work w/ JR), may add a DOS for auto water changes (BTW these work great - have them on my other two tanks)
2 BRS Dosing pumps for Alk and CA
Radion Pro light with XR30 tank mount kit (overkill for this tank, but had one I wasn't using)
Kessil H80 Tuna Flora light plus A80 Gooseneck for refugium (not planning on a skimmer - using the skimmer portion of the sump for refugium)
Assembly was pretty straight forward. Very impressed with how well the cabinet fit together.
Whole system is very well designed
Very Quiet (after you tune the overflow which is pretty easy)
Filter sock change design - easiest tank I have to change out filter socks
Overflow design - unique design and was able to get the tank virtually silent
Very clean look and design (I went with the white version)
Proprietary filter socks - unique size that only take Red Sea socks
Doesn't come with adjustable legs for leveling
Great By Pip on 3/29/2019Pip would recommend this product to a friendI bought a max 170 and it is amazing.
2 weeks, great so far! By Nick on 9/6/2018Nick would recommend this product to a friendWent from a biocube 12 gallon to this... so obviously I’m very happy. Delivery was smooth, setup was pretty easy (although directions lacked words, similar to ikea instructions), and tank looks AWESOME without any livestock yet. One thing to beware of is that it comes with 5/8” tubing for the pump. I got a syncra pump which comes with a barb fitting for 3/4” tubing. I was able to temporarily jimmy-rig this but just know you will probably need an adapter if you go with a syncra pump. Or get bigger tubing. I’ll give another update in a year or so, but as of now I’d highly recommend this!
LEAKED From Silicone Joint After 1 Year By SnotDoc on 3/26/2017SnotDoc wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI purchased this a little over a year ago and it has been running without issue until last Saturday when it randomly sprung a LEAK from the back silicone joint. The resulted in a stream of water literally shooting out of the side of the tank. Required full breakdown. They did rapidly offer to replace the aquarium and tech support was very helpful.
Great little reef By Graham on 6/4/2016Graham would recommend this product to a friendA beautiful tank, seems bigger then it is, solid craftsmanship, beautiful glass, looks great with a few Kessils hanging over it.
excellent By RT on 6/4/2016RT would recommend this product to a friend170 model 2 months in: The attention to detail is excellent. From the silicone seams to the overflow cover with perforated removable tab for light mounting you really can't beat this tank. The stand is high quality, sturdy, and is equipped with padding for both the tank and sump. The overflow and plumbing set up is simple and has zero noise. Even the door has a padded closing mechanism in the hinges. Glass clarity is excellent and there are no signs of mass production. I don't know how you can improve on this tank for the money. I can't wait to get a larger version.
Can the Reefer 170 be bought without the sump? If so, What is the price with out the sump?
I need a larger sump than what is provided with the Reefer 170; What do you recommend?
What return pump would you recommend for this tank?
Have a great day!
