A power filter, often hang on back or internal, pulls water through media such as sponges, carbon, or pads to trap debris, reduce discoloration, and provide surface area for beneficial bacteria. A canister filter sits outside the tank, usually below it, with built in trays or baskets that can be filled with a variety of media for customized performance.
