Overview
Sea Lettuce (Ulva) is a vibrant green algae that grows in delicate, translucent sheets. Known for its fast growth and rich nutrient content, it is an excellent source of food for herbivorous fish. A clip is recommended to hold it in place while fish graze on it, preventing it from drifting in the water column and growing inside the main display aquarium.
While Sea Lettuce is popular as fish food, it is not the best macroalgae for use in refugiums. Due to its rapid growth and tendency to clog equipment, it should be housed in a separate holding tank to avoid obstructing baffles or filters. Its primary function is to provide a nutritious, aquacultured food source for herbivorous fish, making it an ideal supplement to their diet. It should not be used as a substitute for other macroalgae like Chaeto or Dragon's Breath, which are better suited for nutrient export in refugium systems.
