- Flipper MAX Magnetic Cleaner
Compatible for glass or acrylic aquariums up to 1 inch.
Flipper magnet cleaners allow you to fully clean your aquariums glass with just a single tool. The flippers ability to flip from the side with a scraper attachment for stuck on coralline, to the scrubber side with a soft pad for final cleaning of the tank's glass.
When using the scraper side of the Flipper magnets there are only 3 points of contact which keeps that chance of scratching down to a minimum.
- Made with rare earth magnets for incredible cleaning strength and durability. Cleans even the most stubborn coralline algae.
- Blade side has only 3 contact points resulting in a 3mm gap between the cleaner and the glass. This minimizes the chance of trapping sand, and thus reduces the chance of scratching, even when cleaning below the sand!.
- Unique orienting buoyancy always keeps the magnets facing the glass for easy retrieval. Plus, Flipper is nearly neutral buoyancy so it does not sink like a stone if the magnets are disengaged.
- Includes Stainless Steel for glass tanks.
- It is suggested to replace blades every 3-6 months to maintain optimal algae scraping.
Left BIG scratches By Sarah on 4/10/2020Sarah wouldn't recommend this product to a friendOne month in, left two giant 6" long scratches right on the front of my brand new Waterbox. Ugh. I never had this issue with my old MagFloats.
Most regrettable purchase ever By Eric on 8/15/2019Eric wouldn't recommend this product to a friendThis scraper put a 9 inch scratch in the front of my beautiful glass Red Sea tank. Worst purchase I've ever made.
Disappointed By Tom on 7/25/2019Tom wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI purchased this product for my new 300 with 3/4 glass and I'm disappointed. I've switched back to another brand that BRS, unfortunately, does not carry. Things I don't like, It scratched my glass, It doesn't float, and I wasn't able to remove the more stubborn algae. This product seemed like it would be better but in the end the simple MagFloat turned out to be the better product. In the item description - "Unique orienting buoyancy always keeps the magnets facing the glass for easy retrieval. Plus, Flipper is nearly neutral buoyancy so it does not sink like a stone if the magnets are disengaged." This is false. It doesn't float it slowly sinks, so when it does separate your powerheads will carry it right into your rocks/corals. Flipping is also a pain, I was able to figure it out, but it just unnecessary.
I had been a MagFloat customer for years and wanted to try something different. I have since switched back. I'm writing this review after proving to myself which is the better product. Floating is a good thing and the MagFloat removed all the stubborn algae from the glass.
One of my best purchases ever! By Mark H. on 8/8/2018Mark H. would recommend this product to a friendBeen in the hobby for over 20 years and this has to be one of the most useful products I've ever purchased!
I use the Max on a 300gal with 5/8" glass. Very strong! My only complaint is that it is so strong that the handle needs to be a bit thicker so I can move it easier. Other than that, this thing is perfect! Flipping scrubber to scraper with a twist of the handle and I can clean my whole tank in about 10 min....probably 5x faster than anything else I've used. The blade will get off everything, but I save it for the corraline (cuts thru it like butter) and use the pad everywhere else. Keep the pad out of the substrate though. This is so strong that any trapped sand would likely scratch. The blade side has a gap so sand doesn't get trapped, so I use the blade down near sand. Had the Max a year so far and only had to replace the blade one time. Anyway, it's an amazing cleaner and you'll be happy to have one!!
Better than expected By Andy on 8/7/2018Andy would recommend this product to a friendBought the Max for a 125g, figured it would be good for daily cleaning and maybe some of the newer lighter coraline. The Flipper Max was able to cut even the older stuff on the sides and I did not need to do it by hand. Stronger than expected.
Works only for a few months... By Charly on 7/22/2018Charly wouldn't recommend this product to a friendWorked fine for a few months now it won't remove Coraline algae. New blades work somewhat. Now the inside magnet from the outside piece detached itself from the housing and it doesn't work at all anymore. Disappointed considering it's not that cheap.
It will SCRATCH the GLASS By Mike on 4/24/2018Mike wouldn't recommend this product to a friendIt first I loved it, then started not cleaning to the point that my old Mag cleaner worked better and thats after I installed a new blade! Then I started to see scratches on the glass, Don't waste your money.
Not effective on acrylic By David on 3/3/2018David wouldn't recommend this product to a friendThe magnets are very strong and flipping it is not hard but the cleaner is not effective on acrylic. The plastic blade will not scrape coralline algae off acrylic. I suspect the metal blade would be effective on glass, but of course you can't use that on acrylic. The flip side is too soft to scrub most film algae so I'm going to have to go to Mighty Mag and buy one of their algae cutter bags and try putting that over the wet side block.
Be VERY careful along the sand bed. Even though the scraper side rides only on the blade and two small plastic beads to prevent sand from getting caught between the magnets it can still get caught between the scraper and glass. I have lots of new scratches.
Finally, the dry side is very difficult to hold. It is too thin to grip effectively and my hand tires easily dragging it across the tank and I am a big man with big hands. It needs a more ergonomic grip designed to be held in a person's hand. If you have small, or even medium hands, then expect to need to use both of them.
Very disappointed. For $80, look elsewhere.
The Bomb, at first... Then By Hap on 1/15/2018Hap wouldn't recommend this product to a friendOut of the package I was happy as a clam with its ease of use. Somewhere around the six month mark performance started to tank. OK, blades get dull. Ordered up the replacement blades, that didn't cut the coralline. Contacted the manufacturer, after submitting a proof of ownership photo, they sent me a replacement. Now four months into this scrapper is back to it's old actinic. I guess it works well enough if I wanted to devote time to clown around with a replacement every four to six months. There has got to be something better out there. I'll just have to scourer around and look for it.
Great Item with One Exception By John on 12/15/2017John would recommend this product to a friendI have a Max and it does a great job cleaning the glass. Flipping is easy. But mine does not float as advertised. More of an annoyance than anything and I can work around it.
I have a suggestion though. The outside piece should be a bit more ergonomic. Maybe an ovoid shape that you can really get your hand around. As it is, my fingers and hand get a little tired (OK they are old) and as it is now designed it gets a little difficult to grip.
Awsome By Anthony on 10/17/2017Anthony would recommend this product to a friendThis by far is the best purchase I have made for my tank. It really works great, makes a quick job of my glass 325 gallon tank.
Awesome By Ndrwater on 10/2/2017Ndrwater would recommend this product to a friendAwesome. Don't know why I waited so long to get one. Now I have 2. One for each tank.
Is the MAX bigger than the standard flipper? What are the dimensions?
The Max is larger. The inside dimensions are 6.5"x3" x1" and the outside dimensions are 5"x 2.5"x 1" Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Can this be used on aquariums with 3/4" thick glass?
This will work great with 3/4" glass and acrylic. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Will the Flipper Max work on 1/2" thick glass?
The Flipper Max will work really well with ½” glass. It is rated for tanks with glass up to 1” thick.
With a tank that has squared off corners, how do you clean the acrylic side panels after cleaning the front? Do I have to take it apart?
Most magnetic algae cleaners will be able to make the corner by slowly moving the external portion to the other side, the inner portion will be able to follow.
