Battery backup modules are one of the best investments any serious hobbyist can purchase.

The IceCap Battery backup system is compatible for most 12-24 volt DC powered pumps.  Most notably the MaxSpect Gyre 230 and Gyre 250 pumps, along with the IceCap 1K and 3K Gyres.

Power outages will happen every now and then, and unless your system has a generator as a backup, the next best thing is a battery backup for your powerheads.  After a power outage within as little as 2 hours dissolved oxygen levels can start to deplete, which will usually result in loss of valuable fish and corals.  By keeping water moving and encouraging gas exchange at the surface of the aquarium, days can go by without needing to worry about depleting oxygen levels in the tank.  The battery backup will be able to automatically turn on when power is lost to the pumps.

  • No more loud battery powered air stones
  • Connect multiple for longer run times
  • Provides power for up to 2 pumps
  • Compatible with most 12 - 24 volt DC pumps
  • Automatic operation

The IceCap battery backup works with almost all DC powered pumps, however, if you have a MaxSpect Gyre pump running on an IceCap Gyre Interface Module, the module will automatically detect when power is lost, and decrease the overall speed of the pump to 30% to lengthen battery life.

Product Questions

I have apex and when I feed fish My apex turns off gyre outlets will this turn on my 3k gyre since technically gyres going to lose power.
Question by: Max Tsymbal on Jun 4, 2019, 3:30 PM
Hey there,
Great question! Unfortunately there is no way to do that if you are just connecting the controller to the APEX since the way the APEX works is by turning the power OFF and there is no way for the pump controller to know if the OFF is because the user turned OFF the outlet or it is a power outage.

IF you want to use the gyre with the APEX and a backup battery, you will need to connect the gyre to the APEX using the IceCap Gyre Interface and the variable port on your APEX. If you have any further questions please let us know. Happy Reefing!

Is this battery back up compatible with Ecotech products? Could I run an MP 40 or mp10 on it? Icecap makes great products and for 60 bucks less this could be a no brainier.
Question by: Mike on May 21, 2016, 12:22 PM
Great question! Unfortunately the IceCap battery backup is not intended to be used with Ecotech product and will not work.
Answer by: Carter on May 24, 2016, 2:19 PM
Does the battery power turn on when power from the charger is lost or when power to the pump is lost? I have my gyres connected to a wave maker that turns the power to the pump off and on so this will not work for me unless it switches to battery only when the battery charger loses power.
Question by: Reefdaddy on May 19, 2016, 12:49 PM
