- VorTech Battery Back-up - EcoTech Marine
Why does BRS recommend this?
For almost all people it is not if, but when the power will be lost to your tank. If you have Ecotech Vortech pumps you will get a lot of value out of the Ecotech Battery Backup module. It is one of the easiest battery backup solutions on the market, and once you piece together another battery backup configuration there is a ton of value in the Ecotech line and their battery backup
In an aquarium with no flow, fish and corals begin to die in as little as 4 to 10 hours. The VorTech Battery Backup is reef tank insurance in an aluminum housing. By adding the VorTech Battery Backup, your tank is insulated from power interruptions for up to 36 hours with the MP40w and up to 72 hours with the MP10 and MP20. The Battery Back-up is now compatible with the Ecotech Vectra Return Pump too (booster cable required).

3 and counting By omar on 1/31/2019omar wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI have got 3 batteries over the last 3 years. Every one work for 6 8 months then stop working. Emailed ecotech many times no one even reaponce while they will responded about questions for other products or purchases questions.
FYI, this thing is big By Peter on 11/29/2018Peter would recommend this product to a friendHard to tell from the pictures, but this thing is pretty big. Weighs in at 14.6 lbs and 9"x8". Also does not come with mounting hardware so off to HD to find screws and drywall anchors to fit the 6 smallish holes. Otherwise helps me get through the short (2-3 hr) frequent power interruptions I get in rural Alabama. For longer ones I fire up the generator.
Saved my tank By Daniel on 11/9/2018Daniel would recommend this product to a friendI've owned an ecotech battery backup for approximately 2 years. It has always served me well during short power outages to keep flow going throughout my tank. It most recently was put to the test when I was on vacation and storms hit my area causing an extended power outage. My vortech kept two MP40s goung for 12 hours. I had someone to check on the tank and had them disconnect one pump to maximize the battery life. It ran the remaining single MP40 for an additional 6 hours before power was finally restored to my area. I had 0 livestock or coral losses. I was so grateful to have that peace of mind that I ordered a second one to daisy chain with my first one to provide additional backup time in case I have another scenario where power is out over an extended period of time. Of course, this is not going to replace the need for a generator or something that can provide more significant power if you need something to last more than a couple of days and power other equipment, but this covers 99.5% of power failures that I run into for my home.
Last less than2 year By pOng on 10/21/2018pOng wouldn't recommend this product to a friendShort life, it dead when i needed it. Not worth the high price just go by UPC.
Still working after 1.5 yrs By Paul on 9/23/2018Paul would recommend this product to a friendSo far so good, but after recent power outage noticed MP40’s did not restart as controllers flashed green and red. After I cleaned both wet side assemblies the pumps restarted on backup power.
Additional parts needed By Steve on 5/31/2018Steve wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI wish I would have known you needed an additional part for the Vectra return pumps.
work as advertise By Charlie on 5/24/2018Charlie would recommend this product to a friendEcotech Battery Back-up is working great. But you will need to consider the size and weight to store it.
Dead after 12 months By Greg on 5/16/2018Greg wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI bought this battery backup in case of power loss. Unfortunately, after 12 months of ownership, the battery reads 10.5 volts. The battery always had the trickle charger attached to it. Totally dead and headed to the trash!! Luckily, its not often the power goes out at my house.
Awesome backup battery By Adrian Diaz on 5/7/2018Adrian Diaz would recommend this product to a friendWorks perfectly, but just keep in mind that if you are using a controller, there is no way to turn the powerhead off unless you have an special module like WXM or Reeflink (that would require your wireless power head). The reason is most of these controllers turn on / off the switch to control the on or off of the powerhead (some of us like to turn off powerheads when feeding fish or spot feeding corals). If you have this battery without the modules you need to turn off manually otherwise the battery will keep the powerhead on. Actually not a big deal, but if you want full control with your controller keep this in mind (like when you are feeding with an automatic feeder, you won't be able to turn off the pump if you are not in home).
You may need an additional purchase By Gary on 4/26/2018Gary would recommend this product to a friendHaven't used the product yet. Turns out you need a booster (~ $30) if you're going to use it with a Vectra return pump. Wish I'd done a little more research before the initial purchase.
Unhappy By Reefer on 7/20/2017Reefer wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI purchased a battery back up about 2 1/2 years ago. Power has never been out any extended period of time. This battery is totally dead and totally useless. I have to toss it. I spent $165 for a back up that did not work when I needed it. Out of warrenty and now trash. Eco Tech says it should last 4-5 years.
My power went out and the battery backup was a dud... By Tony on 5/10/2017Tony wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI brought a year ago and when my power when out, the battery backup did not work. I contacted ecotech and it was determined the battery backup didn't have any charge.. Which I thought was strange because I always keep it charged using the trickle charger. So I tested it and charged it again, and after unplugging the charger, the battery backup powered my MP40 for approx 2 minutes before it had no charge. Ecotech asked me to ship it back for them to "look" at, but this thing is heavy so I just threw it away.. complete waste of money.
Maybe I got a bad apple unit... but when my power went out, this thing didnt help at all!
I hooked up battery back up and the plug (part# 10427) going from MP-10 controller to battery back up, does not plug in flush on either end . Is this normal? Fortunately, this does not affect operation. About 3/16 plug is exposed.
This is normal with the battery back up cable and is on our systems exactly the same.
Can the Maxspect Gyre be connected to this backup battery since Maxspect doesn't offer one?
The Gyre can connect to the Ice Cap Battery back up listed below! The ecotech back up will not come with the correct plug. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Can this be used with the with Neptune Systems WAV? Would you need an adapter to do so? Can you plug the WAV module into the Votech Backup for power to the pump? I have the Apex on a battery backup so the brain could still tell it what to do.
We are not aware of the Ecotech battery back up being able to adapt to the WAV pump. As this connects with a apex cable that is not easy to adapt it would not be an easy process to connect to the 1link. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Will the battery backup booster for connecting the Vectra return pump be available soon?
We do not have an exact delivery date as of yet but are currently looking to bring the booster in stock as soon as possible.
In the instance of a power outage, will the battery turn the on to keep the pumps running automatically?
Yes, the battery backup will be plugged into the wall outlet and will automatically detect a power loss and keep the pumps running at a reduced speed.
Will this back up battery work with jebao rw series?, will it give me more time than the jebao back up battery?
Would i need to buy anything else ti make it work?
Can this back up be used for my ecotech radion xr30 pro..... and if so how many do i require thanks
The Battery Back up will work with both Radions and Vortech pumps. The Battery will come with 2 outlets to plug into either the Radion Ballast or the Vortech pump. If you have 2 Radions and only want battery back up for them you will need just 1 battery. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Hi! I have two MP1O'S (one for each of my tanks that are next to each other). For how long can both of my pumps run on a single battery pack? Thanks! I'm assuming that it comes with 2 cables right?
You can expect up to 36 hours with 2 vortech mp10's on a single battery back up. The battery back up with come with ports to work with 2 vortech's simultaneously.
Does this backup system only work with vorteck products
This is designed only for the Vortech Pumps.
What kind of battery is there?
The battery is 18 Amp-Hour 12-volt sealed. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
My currently have a float valve in my overflow, and my apex will shut down my return pump (Vectra M1).
Now, if I plug the Vectra into battery backup, how can I shut off the punp when my tank overflow?
Can I set the pump to run slower when on battery backup?
With the pump on battery back up the flow will be reduced to 30% of the intensity. You will need to unplug the battery back up when turning the pump off completely.
Can this be used with DC Tunze pumps like the 6155?
Good question! The EcoTech Battery Backup is specifically designed for EcoTech Marine products. Unfortunately, this pump will not be compatible. Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with!
Hello, I bought the battery backup and wanted to know if I should connect my two MP 40 or just one?
I have a 150G display 1.50 meter long.
The main threat when the power goes out is oxygen exchange and one pump should suffice for that. If it were my tank, I would err on the side of longer battery life by only using one pump on the battery.
How long before the battery expires or needs replacement?
What is the life-span of the battery?
We are not certain about the full life of the battery through out the years however we have been running these for 3 years without issue. the back up battery will of course last 24-48 hours depending on the load.
If i have my MP10 hooked up to my apex can i still intergrate this battery back up on the system? Also, is their any other battery backups?
Can I use this battery backup with my Korlia Evo pumps?
Unfortunately not. The vortech battery backups have connectors specifically sized for a port on the vortech pumps. They also run on DC current (the same type of energy stored in a battery) whereas the Koralias run on AC current like that from your walls. For the Koralias there wouldn't be very many options in the event of a power outage other then a generator.
Can this battery be used with other pumps besides vortech?
It is only designed to be used with the EcoTech Pumps. Most pumps don't run on DC power like the EcoTech Vortechs do.
