- Vertex Alpha 200 Protein Skimmer
Why does BRS recommend this?
When it comes to the best skimmers that we have to offer our minds go straight to the Alpha line of skimmers. For a serious workhorse of a skimmer, while being a beautiful piece of art at the same time, the Vertex Alpha skimmers are the way to go. There are going to be cheaper skimmers on the market, however, none of them will compare to the build quality of the Alpha skimmers.
The Vertex Alpha 200 Protein Skimmer combines technology, performance, and convenience to create a high-quality needlewheel design at a great value.

5 years dead By Tim on 9/9/2019Tim wouldn't recommend this product to a friendWorked great for almost five years, but now the pump failed. Tried the support link email on their web page to get a replacement, 5 days no response. Called was told I had to send another email to email@example.com, even after letting them know I already did that on the web page.
If they had customer service I would recommend, but now I have a tank that's been running for going on a week without a skimmer. Beginning to look like my only solution will be to buy a new skimmer, It will not be a Vertex.
BigBossReefer By James on 8/10/2018James would recommend this product to a friendAmazing skimmer! I have it installed in the sump of my 175 gal reefer that is stocked heavily. If I didn’t feed so much this skimmer would be too much for this size of tank, it’s a beast! I highly recommend washing it out with vinegar and a clean dedicated rag every couple of weeks for the first month or two and start with the outlet pipe fully open and the Venturi 2 turns out. If you have problems with overflows wash with vinegar and check these settings. Water level must be kept at recommended height as well.
Absolute garbage By Johnpp on 6/26/2017Johnpp wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI have tried everything with this skimmer and it still does not want to work properly. It does not help that their customer service is horrible either. I would expect to get a decent product for close to $1k but that isn't the case with this skimmer.
Dead Silent, and a Beast! By Eric on 7/29/2016Eric wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI'm just finishing up a build to replace my 75 gallon reef tank with a new 220 gallon setup. To handled the extra size and bio load, I decided to replace my Reef Octopus Diablo with the Vertex Alpha.
I knew it would be a great skimmer by the reviews but the one thing that caught me off guard was just how quite it is. I've grown used to the low growl the Reef Octopus makes and have learned to just tune it out. I figured where other reviewers referred to the Alpha as "quite," it was more a relative description than anything else. I was wrong. Very wrong.
I plugged the Alpha in for the first time the other day and literally spent five minutes debugging the programming attached to the Apex outlet it was plugged in to because it wasn't running. Turns out it was running the whole time; it's literally so quiet I didn't notice.
Amazing skimmer By kiel on 11/18/2015kiel would recommend this product to a friendI replace a $500 dollar skimmer with this one and the difference is huge. Very easy to tune in. Pulls a ton out of the water. Large drop in nitrates.
No better product on the market By Adam on 9/5/2015Adam would recommend this product to a friendSeriously, there has not been a better skimmer built for the hobby reef aquarium keeper. This thing pulls so much out of my water every day. Plus, you just can't get over how high quality the workmanship is that goes into this. Every time I empty the cup I am again impressed by the solid material and workmanship. I am a fan for life and will buy Vertex/Royal every time. The cost is a bit more but I now 100% understand why and agree.
Excellent By Sapelo on 8/31/2015Sapelo would recommend this product to a friendReally very amazing. Quiet, straight forward, EASY and wonderfully effective. I wish I'd bought this skimmer from the beginning!
I didn't know it could be this good By Kevin on 9/14/2013Kevin would recommend this product to a friendI started a few years ago and got a smaller Tunze Doc Skimmer. I've always had trouble adjusting it and it just seemed like cheap plastic. After fiddling with it all the time and it barely producing skimmate, I decided to upgrade.
I got the Vertex Alpha 200 and I couldn't be happier. If you follow the directions, it was pretty easy to setup and adjust. The workmanship is so solid, and I've been running it for two weeks now. From day one it was producing a lot of nasty smelling dark skimmate. It was so beautiful I didn't even know it was supposed to look like that.
I am thrilled with this product.
I would say that while it's a good idea that the neck unscrews so it takes less vertical space to take it out....I think after a while it might get more difficult to unscrew the head. Since there are no handles on the top and bottom it's kind of awkward to take it off sometimes. Maybe I'm missing something...
love it By ROGERWILCO357 on 9/8/2013ROGERWILCO357 would recommend this product to a friendLove the feel of workmanship just touching and picking it up and you know its no mickey mouse skimmer I have 2 and love them skims all the garbage just wish they had the automatic neck cleaner as part of the purchase deal or bundle deal price.
Built like a tank but........ By Robert on 11/25/2012Robert would recommend this product to a friendI ordered this skimmer earlier this year and found it's well built!!! There are a couple things to keep in mind. It is advertised as having dual pump input ports....it doesn't have 2 input ports, only 1(wish they would change this in the product description for those it matters to ). The other thing is there is no manual included with the skimmer, I downloaded one from Vertex here; http://www.vertexaquaristik.com/Portals/0/products/proteinSkimmers/internalSkimmers/alphaSeries/skimmerManual.pdf. ............ you are paying the extra $ for the best and not getting any documentation?!!!!, Vertex could definitely do a better job here!! With this said I wouldn't hesitate to buy this again, The skimmer is GREAT and that's what matters!!! BRS was ready to take care of the dual port not being there but, it I didn't need it in my case. It's reassuring to know BRS does back up what they sell and that is great piece of mind when you are spending big $, nice job! THANKS BRS !!!!!!!
Super skimmer! By BK on 10/5/2012BK would recommend this product to a friendFirst off, this skimmer is not cheap. Heck, who would pay $800+ for a protein skimmer when an entire tank setup can be had for this price. But if you are the rare aquarist who wants the absolute best, this is the skimmer for you. First off, it's super quiet- a friend of mine remarked that he couldn't hear anything from the red dragon pump. Second, the construction is rock solid - titanium screws, cast acrylic, nothing flimsy. Finally, this skimmer pulls so much thick, nasty green stuff from my tank that within days, my sump water was clear again without a green tinge. Buy it once and use for life!
WoW By Eric on 8/14/2012Eric would recommend this product to a friendSave yourself some frustration and money and buy the best skimmer the first time around. This skimmer is whisper quite and the performance is hands down the best I have seen. I have only been running the skimmer 4 days and it has out performed a $500 skimmer and a $600 skimmer I purchased prior.
What is the best replacement or equivalent pump for this skimmer?
The best option would be to contact Proline the North American distributor of Vertex. They will be able to recommend a replacement that will work perfectly with the Alpha 200. I have attached the contact information below.
Proline (Vertex and Korallen Zucht) – 877-682-3474 (Ext 4179) Jen@prolineaquatics.com
Do you have info on the North American distributor? Proline seems to be out of business. Website is down and phone number does not work.
They are now operating simply as Vertex Technologies, and and if you need support with their products, they can be reached with the below contact info.

Have a great day!
I just recently purchased the Vertex Alpha 200 from you. Works great but bubbles are overflowing outside of the cup. The amount of bubbles coming into the collection cup is fine (not too much water), but some of the bubbles are coming up through the holes on top of the lid and some over the side outside the cup.
Any suggestions on how to stop this?
Due to manufacturing residues and initial break-in of these skimmers, it is actually very normal to have a period where the skimmer will overflow with bubbles. Vertex actually recommends running the skimmer initially with the collection cup removed and allowing the system to rinse and overflow. After a few days you can try to put the cup back on and start tuning in the skimmer, but be aware that it can take several days or even a couple of weeks to fully break in and settle down. Have a great day!
Hello quick question. Which vectra cleaning lid will fit this model of alpha skimmer
For the Alpha 200 you would want the 200mm lid.
Please recommend a vertex skimmer for a 189 gallon thank with a fifty gallon sump and it also has lps and softies
How much room do you have in your sump for the skimmer? That will be the biggest limiting factor as to which one you can use.
