Full Details

Ensure the life of your fish with the Silent Air Pump with Battery-Powered Back Up from Penn Plax. Plug in the AC power cord, and when there is a power outage, the Silent Air Pump will automatically flip to battery power.

Power outages are easily one of the top reasons for total tank disasters. During a power outage, water movement comes to a halt and when that happens gas exchange will stop. Over a short time, oxygen levels in the water can become depleted, and your fish can start to suffocate. A battery powered air pump is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to promote gas exchange during a power outage. Using a simple airstone, or even just allowing a free flow of air will help agitate the surface of the water, allowing oxygen to transfer and dissolve into the water.

Almost all battery powered air pumps do make a bit of vibrational noise and placing a shock absorbing pad around the pump or on the surface it is laying on will help minimize the noise.

  • Be sure to occasionally check your batteries
  • NOTE: Power cord does NOT charge the batteries
  • Quickly test the Air Pump by unplugging AC power cord

  • Air pump. It works. By Rivers on 8/29/2015

This pump was bought as a safety air supply for moving my fish when I bought a new house. They were all still alive when I got there, and now I keep it around just in case there is a power outage, good peace of mind.
  • Using one for years - essential backup By Rick on 7/18/2015

I have been using one of these on my tank for years. It works very well as a backup air supply in case of a power failure. You do need to be careful that water does not get into the battery compartment as this will cause problems, so the device needs to be installed so you won't get water backing up through the airline into it. Uses normal D Cell batteries. In case of power failure the device will supply air from 6 to 8 hours depending on how much is left in the batteries. You plug this in to your power supply and when power goes off it turns on. Note: You can also use this as a separate battery powered air supply if needed.
  • Must have insurance By Andrew on 7/1/2015

Do I need this? Duh. When the power goes off on you're not home this thing will kick on and make bubbles. Nuf said! That should answer the question.
  • Good but be careful By Isaiahbelle on 6/8/2015

The product is much cheaper on Amazon first off. Second, the airstone broke right away, I had to buy a better one at my local pet store. Also had to pick up more tubing, they give you very little. I tested it and it worked like it was supposed too. Not bad for the price I paid on Amazon.
  • Portable Air By Salty on 3/24/2015

I have been planning a two day drive to transport coral and fish over 600 miles by car and this is ideal . At first I found it confusing that the pump did not work when I plugged it in . Then a quick view view of the directions showed that the plug only was to activate the pump in a power failure , but it does work great as advertized when not plugged in .

Product Questions

So since this pump is always connected to a power source, I'm assuming that it turns on automatically if power is interrupted? Would this help keep my prized corals alive in my 28g and 10g cubes?thanks.
Question by: Jose Saballos on May 13, 2016 8:59:00 AM
Great question! You are correct in your assumption that the pump turns on with the battery in the event of power failure. This is a great way of buying some time for smaller systems until the power comes back on:)

In your video you said the pump has to sit on the rim of the tank, but included is 24" of line. Can this pump be mounted underneath the tank out of site?
Question by: Christian Gates on May 10, 2017 9:40:00 PM
Hey there,
It's not required to have the pump mounted to the rim, and you would be fine to locate the pump more out of site, but the pump should never be located below the water line as this could allow a siphon to form which could drain water out of the tank.

Have a great day!

Question by: Chris on Mar 27, 2014 7:07:00 AM
Hi Chris,
The sab10 is only battery powered, it does not have the ability to run off a standard owed outlet.
