Even Spread & Coloration
Once you put the XR30 Diffuser on your Ecotech Radion LED light you will instantly see a better balance of light throughout your aquarium. PAR tests have proven that even though the overall peak PAR numbers will decrease, the lower light areas will actually receive more light from a diffused source. The overall light loss is around 20%, and since a majority of us do not use even 80% of the available lighting output, the PAR loss can be combatted by increasing the overall power delivered to the LEDs.
Increased Spectrum Blending
Diffusing LED lights greatly helps blend the overall spectrum into one cohesive light source. Traditionally aquarium LEDs have used optics to increase the penetration of the light, but doing so actually makes each LED into its own little spotlight, making it harder for colors to blend. With the overall amount of light available in modern reef tank LEDs, more power is not exactly the best thing, and throughout our testing, we have found that evenly spread light that is blended properly is more important for coral health and growth.
LED lights are known for producing a lot of shimmer, also known as the "disco-ball effect" and the Ecotech Radion Diffuser directly attacks this problem head-on. With the overall goal being to mimic the natural sunlight or metal halide shimmer effects, the XR30 Diffuser is not perfect, but it gets much closer than almost any LED available today.
Installation only takes a few minutes, and by unscrewing the bottom plate with a Phillips screwdriver, you can then attach the mounting adapter plate. The diffuser lens will then magnetically attach to the adapter plate. The magnetic attachment makes the diffuser lens very easy to clean

Questionable purchase By Israel on 10/3/2019Israel would recommend this product to a friendPro: it does diffuse the light nicely.
Cons: diffuser material is flimsy
No matter how much you tighten screws the you can't get the plate to sit flush all the way around the light. If the bracket was black instead of white it wouldn't be that noticeable
Too late to turn back... By Glassgold on 2/10/2019Glassgold wouldn't recommend this product to a friendFor the price of the Radion, these should have been free. But that happens when you make a product and people spend thousands of dollars to eat it up all the overpriced garbage. Then learn the affect of the light are identical to the $100 Black Boxes. Weren't these Radions ever hung on a tank before introducing them to the public... mmm? Should have just bought the Giesemann Aurora. Now all the energy that was being is being used to penetrate the diffuser. Too late to turn back now...
Overpriced and terrible design By Craig on 12/27/2018Craig wouldn't recommend this product to a friendAbout a $1 worth of materials if that and way overpriced. It diffuses the light that is the only positive I have so far, glad I got it as a gift and didn't spend $65 on this. Frame was bent so does not line up right around the light and looks terrible. Probably fall off in a few days with their garbage mounting system. We'll see how long it lasts, but not expecting much.
Good, installation note By Ryan on 9/14/2018Ryan would recommend this product to a friendLove the look, as long as you can adjust for intensity properly they are great. Personally I'd treat it as a new acclimation and not raise the intensity immediately! By design IT DIFFUSES so corals on the sides will get some of the hot spot that use to be in the middle. Raising intensity immediately risks those coral.
One other installation note to be aware of, they will not fit correctly if you don't flatten out the main power wire that runs up along the cooling fan. Simply un-twisting it will allow the diffuser to seat correctly and you don't have to disconnect the wire to do this. It's twisted in the middle.
Radion XR30 Diffuser Upgrade By Michael on 9/1/2018Michael would recommend this product to a friendDefiantly a much needed improvement to an already great light. Prior to its addition my coral growth was good but uneven , thicker in areas and thinner in others . It was as if the lights ,though they did cover the entire tank area , had a conical effect on the coral growth. Since the diffuser addition I have noted an evening out of the coral growth patterns . Also , less concentrated algae growth on the viewing surfaces of the tanks has been noticed making it's cleaning and removal easier . I do highly recommend this upgrade but feel that it is pricey and sad that it was not initially thought of and incorporated in this high end already costly light.
Bent from factory By Evesniper on 8/30/2018Evesniper wouldn't recommend this product to a friendthese are VERY low quality. There is no QC. The frame on mine is twisted making the product unusable , and the film has a wrinkle in it...
Not worth $65.. if it was closer to $25 it would make more sense...
Better looking By Jerry on 5/16/2018Jerry would recommend this product to a friendBetter looking and seems to have more coverage. I think the unit Was a bit high on power so the change over worked out just fine. Thanks BRS
PAR Meter recommended By Tom on 5/9/2018Tom would recommend this product to a friendSince installing the diffusers I've been having issues keeping SPS alive. Since I didn't have a PAR meter, I was just guessing on how much to increased intensity. I though that going from 60% to 75% would be enough, turns out it wasn't. Within a couple of weeks I started to have issues with SPS. Since I couldn't find any issues related to water, I purchased a PAR meter and discovered the diffusers have decreased PAR by 25-30%.
My setup includes 2 Radion G3's mounted 8" above the water line with the Coral Labs AB program. Without the diffuser AB @ 60% intensity was 250 PAR 10" below the water line. Put the diffusers on and PAR drops to 175. In order to get PAR back to 250 I have to increase intensity to 100%. Had I not purchased the meter, I would never have thought to run my lights at 100%.
I do like the way the diffuser blends the light and I'm going to keep them. Just wish Ecotech would have provided better documentation and that I had purchased a PAR meter earlier.
Not good product By Steve on 5/4/2018Steve wouldn't recommend this product to a friendThe diffuser slow down my growth for my sps!I try to use it for three months already and it did not work well so I had to switch back to normal configuration！ The par level went down by 20% even though the shimmer goes away ! I will not give up for growth sorry
Holy Wow!! By Pixel Reef on 3/24/2018Pixel Reef would recommend this product to a friendWhat a HUGE difference this made to my G4 lights. Would definitely recommend these. The actual diffuser material could be attached better but other than that, the light difference is really amazing.
Light Spread Complete By Scubaman on 3/20/2018Scubaman would recommend this product to a friendI was given 3 diffuser's as a gift and I immediately saw the difference in the light spread as I have 4 lights over my 4 hundred gallon aquarium; the difference was so obvious I had to purchase the 4th. At the time I was upgrading my 3 Gen 1's and one Gen 3 to all Gen 4's and keeping the Gen 3 as a spare; the diffuser worked fine on the Gen 1's.
When installing the diffuser I initially had an issue with the o-ring around the lens seeping out while installing the diffuser; this was remedied by not tightening the screws too much. I'd highly recommend the diffuser as it's the icing on the proverbial cake, making a great product even better.
A home run for Radion owners By Cdub48 on 2/12/2018Cdub48 would recommend this product to a friendI have had the diffuser on my XR30 Gen 4 Pro about two weeks now. It's clear immediately that the spread is much more even and diffuse after installation. The shimmer does in fact look better and there is much less disco effect on the sand and back wall of my tank.
If you were like me and never able to run your Radions at full strength because of hot spots associated with point sources of light, worry no more. This diffuser allows you to use much more of the lights power and therefore the growing potential of the light. (Diffusing the light allows you to run the lights at a higher percentage while decreasing the hot spots that otherwise would occur.)
I am now running my light at 90% with the diffuser and I am seeing incredible coloration and polyp extension in my Acros. Previously I was only running the light at 50% and couldn't get much higher without really blasting the highest two spots in my tank. I can place Acros most anywhere now with a much more even blanket of light :) Highly recommended.
Does this diffuser work on the gen 3 XR30 pro?
Great question! The diffuser for the XR30 will work with all XR30 models.
Hope this helps, have a great day!
