Highly effective for common bacterial infections in fish

Mardel Maracyn is a specially compounded, erythromycin-based antibiotic medication which has been shown to be effective against a number of pathogenic bacteria associated with ornamental fish disease. Erythromycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic and is primarily effective against gram-positive pathogenic organisms. Almost all nitrifying bacteria are gram-negative, so the beneficial biological filter should not be harmed by treatment with Maracyn, and you shouldn't see a spike in ammonia or nitrite. Symptoms of clamped fins, swollen eyes, heavy or rapid breathing, patchy coloration, change in swimming behavior or corner-hiding can be signs of possible bacterial infection and may indicate a need for immediate treatment.

Product Questions

If the instructions say 1 package per 10 gallons, does that mean it must be dosed in a hospital tank? My reef tank is 240 gallons. My hospital tank is 30 gallons. Should I fill 2/3 and use two packages to get the right dose?
Question by: Steven G on Jan 14, 2022, 10:11 AM
I do not recommend dosing a display aquarium for treatment. A quarantine system is best used for treating any disease. You can utilize your hospital tank with filtration(only biological and mechanical) and water changes as needed. You may want to also consider dosing the hospital tank with a bacterial supplement as well to help complete the nitrogen cycle and limit Ammonia spikes from an incomplete nitrogen cycle. If you are only filling the 30 gallon aquarium 2/3 full or 20 gallons then 2 packages should be the adequate dose initially. Be sure to follow the instructions for continued dosing to ensure proper treatment.
