A year in By Ryan on 10/21/2018Ryan would recommend this product to a friendI've been using mine for a year in a well ventilated sump. It's been within 0.1 degree of my Apex for a year now which is good for both.
Use this in series (heater plugs to controller and then to the Apex) with the Apex because you can't really rely on either but no other options exist.
I've also got a second backup heater since all brands fail consistently. Also adding code to the Apex to detect usage anomalies (running too long or to short). The temp can lie but the power usage is tougher to get wrong.
I'm raising my rating (4 stars) and recommending this By Steve on 7/12/2018Steve would recommend this product to a friendI posted a 7/2/2018 review giving 2-stars and not recommending this product. Then I did an autopsy on the until. I discovered that this unit can be calibrated up/down by 3 degrees (or more). Great if you have a NIST traceable probe like the one I bought from BRS. I cut open the thermal probe and carefully removed the thermal sensor to determine it was a Type III thermister (10K Ohms at 25-C). Mine tested at 12K at 25-C and not 10K Ohms which too far off to calibrate. I wrote JBJ informing them of my discovery. They wrote me back within 10 minutes! What!! I followed their email reply and called customer service. They said that the thermal probes need to be replaced every 9-12 months. It is the nature of the probe. Okay for $15, I got my JBJ working again - - so I bought 2 new thermal probes. BTW, I'm handy enough with electrical circuits and tried to "fix" the original probe. I cut off the old thermister and bought a package of 50 count thermisters off of Amazon for $10 (yeah, 20-cents each). I soldered one on and guess what? I should have tried that before ordering an OEM thermister. To make my DYI work, I simply sprayed it with one of those spray-on rubber gutter leak stop products
Other than the thermal probe, the controller and heater work great. The dead-band on this controller is 1 degree, so temperature drops 1 degree below set-point before kicking on and it stays on until temperature reaches 1 degree above set-point (so 2-degree swing). My Inkbird does the same thing, but I can't calibrate the Inkbird like the JBJ.
Thermo probe reading failed - causing heater to stick on. By Steve on 7/2/2018Steve wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI installed this about 18 months ago. It worked fine, but its temperature measurement was off (low) by 1-2 degrees F. I compensated with the set point temperature. Today, my other heater, which is connected to an Ink Bird controller, was sounding an alarm and indicating tank temperature had climbed past my 82F max temp. I checked water temperature with two other in-home devices to confirm the high temperature. The temperature on my JBL controller was reading 78.5 and calling for heat. I disconnected the JBL and cross-check its temperature reading and it now reads a full 5F lower than other thermometers. Thankfully the audible alarm on my Ink Bird called attention to this. I will not be buying a JBL again.
Probe failed after 2 weeks By Dmitry on 2/5/2018Dmitry wouldn't recommend this product to a friendProbe failed after 2 weeks. Temp in tank dropped to 73 degrees. Glad I caught it before it was too late
Waste of money and can crash your tank By Kotler's Reef on 7/17/2017Kotler's Reef wouldn't recommend this product to a friendBought this in the spring and did not use it till November. Probe failed after 3 months. The controller was reading the temp 10 degrees higher then it was. I noticed this bc I have another thermometer. Called JBJ the told me that I need to replace the probe every 3 months. If this was disclosed at time of purchase I would never buy this. I'm now getting and APEX. You should save your money on this. Considering the an APEX jr is not that much more and will not fail like this.
Done By Jeff on 4/15/2017Jeff wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI've had 2 of these fail within just a few months of use, luckily they failed in the off mode.
you get what you pay for, usually By Raymond on 2/27/2017Raymond wouldn't recommend this product to a friendIt works so far, but, the front control pad is coming off 'de-laminating' in less than two weeks of use
No emergency auto shut off. By Jason Bianchi on 1/26/2017Jason Bianchi wouldn't recommend this product to a friendThermostat came out of tank and read the house temperature and ran for 11 hours straight. Would of liked to see an auto shut off after a certain amount of time with no temperature fluctuation in the reading to avoid cooking the tank. However when the probe is in the tank I can hold a two degree tolerance with a Finnex titanium heating element in a 29G biocube.
would recommend this By bwatt on 1/9/2017bwatt would recommend this product to a friendI have had this controller on my 2 tanks for three years with no problems. Had to replace one heater after about a year and a half
Would not recommend this product By Floyd on 12/7/2016Floyd wouldn't recommend this product to a friendBought this item and did not need to use it right away, finally completed build on new tank plugged in controller.....nothing. Not working right out the box, of course it was out of warranty. called JBJ explained the situation, they refuse any compensation, no help what so ever offered. Would not recommend this product.Gave it a star cause i had to.
So far so good By RogerAGrimes on 12/5/2016RogerAGrimes would recommend this product to a friendOnly had mine a week, but so far it's working great. I have a total of three temperature sensors, and it's tracking as accurately as the others (so far).
Buy one By Mark on 3/13/2016Mark would recommend this product to a friendWas really tired of adjusting my heaters , set up the controller worked great. Make sure u call to tank temp,
