Quick Stats
Montipora corals are popular SPS corals known for their bright coloration, fine polyp texture, and wide range of growth forms. Depending on the variety, they may grow in branching, plating, encrusting, or scrolling formations, giving each frag a distinct appearance as it matures.
Often considered one of the more forgiving SPS corals, Montipora are a good choice for reef keepers looking to add faster-growing stony corals without jumping straight into more demanding Acropora species. They do best with stable water parameters, moderate to high flow, and consistent lighting.
Note: This 5-pack includes five different Montipora coral frags selected by Eye Catching Coral. Each pack is chosen to provide a mix of colors and patterns, but specific varieties cannot be guaranteed. Coral selection will vary based on current availability, making every pack a little different.
Water Parameters
Corals thrive in stable water conditions with regular water changes. Corals with a hard skeleton will consume calcium and alkalinity as they grow, often requiring additional supplementation. Routine water testing helps ensure these needs are consistently met.
- Specific Gravity (Salinity): 1.025-1.026
- Temperature: 75-78°F
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Alkalinity: 8-9.5 dKH
- Calcium: 400-450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1300-1450 ppm
- Nitrate (NO3): 10-25 ppm
- Phosphate: 0.01-0.1 ppm
- Nitrite (NO2): Undetectable
- Ammonia (NH3): Undetectable
Lighting Requirements
Most Montipora corals prefer moderate lighting, ideally in the 150-250 PAR range. They tend to be some of the more forgiving SPS corals and can be acclimated to slightly higher lighting over time if necessary.
For those with mixed reef tanks, a PAR meter is an invaluable tool for fine-tuning lighting, helping ensure each coral gets the right intensity to thrive.
Ideal Tank Placement
Montipora corals are typically placed directly on the rockwork. It is important to consider the coral’s natural growth pattern when choosing a location, since plating, branching, and encrusting varieties will affect surrounding corals in very different ways. Leave enough open space around the frag for future growth, and avoid placing plating varieties where they may eventually shade corals below them.
Water Flow Requirements
Moderate to high flow is ideal. Aim for enough water movement to gently shift the coral’s polyps without blasting the coral with direct flow. This will help keep detritus off the coral and promote healthy growth.
Aggressiveness and Compatibility
It's important to give Montipora room to grow. Like most corals, they will fight with any other corals they comes into direct contact with.
Feeding and Nutrition
Montipora primarily rely on photosynthesis for energy, but they can benefit from occasional feeding with powdered coral foods and supplemental amino acid dosing to enhance growth and coloration.
Growth Rate and Pattern
Montipora growth rates and patterns vary by species and variety. Some are relatively fast growers once established, while others take more time. Depending on the type, Montipora may grow in branching, plating, encrusting, or scrolling formations.
Acclimation Process
Acclimation is essential for corals to adjust to their new environment. For a full step-by-step process, refer to our Coral Acclimation Guide.
