Overview
The ECC Blue Plating Photosynthetic Sponge is a rarely seen and eye-catching addition to any reef tank. Unlike more common corals, this sponge brings a fresh twist to aquascaping with its deep blue color and smooth, plating growth.
Sponges like this aren’t seen often in reef tanks, which makes them a great conversation piece and a way to stand out from the crowd. Just remember, this one comes with a simple rule: never expose it to air. As long as it stays submerged during acclimation and placement, it's an easy, fast-growing piece that brings a lot of character to your reef.

Water Parameters
This sponge thrives in stable water conditions with regular water changes. Routine water testing helps ensure these needs are consistently met.
- Specific Gravity (Salinity): 1.025-1.026
- Temperature: 75-78 Degrees F
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Alkalinity: 8-9.5 dKH
- Calcium: 400-450ppm
- Magnesium: 1300-1450ppm
- Nitrate (NO3): 10-25ppm
- Phosphate: 0.01-0.1ppm
- Nitrite (NO2): Undetectable

Lighting Requirements
Photosynthetic Sponges usually do best in moderate lighting, ideally in the 150-250 PAR range.
A PAR meter is invaluable for fine-tuning light levels, helping ensure the aquarium's lighting can support the sponge's photosynthetic needs.
Ideal Tank Placement
The Blue Plating Sponge should be placed directly onto the rockwork, usually somewhere in the middle regions of the aquarium.
Water Flow Requirements
Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal. Make sure there is enough flow to keep any detritus from settling on the surface of the sponge.
Aggressiveness and Compatibility
This sponge is considered to be peaceful, but can grow quickly under the right conditions, leading to a crowding effect.
Feeding and Nutrition
While the Blue Plating Sponge is primarily photosynthetic, it can still benefit from feeding live phytoplankton to the tank.
Growth Rate and Pattern
This sponge is a fast grower and forms a plating structure similar to a Montipora coral.
Acclimation Process
Acclimation is essential for corals to adjust to their new environment. For a full step-by-step process, refer to our Coral Acclimation Guide. Special note: do not expose any sponges to air while acclimating or handling.
