Selecting the right sand: When choosing the right sand for your tank, it is important to keep a few things in mind.
How much flow will be in the tank?
Aquariums with high amounts of water movement will require sand with a larger grain size. Smaller particles can be blown around easily.
What kind of inhabitants will you be keeping?
Many species do require particular types of sand, like gobies, jawfish, and wrasses. Fish and invertebrates that like to burrow or sift through the sand will do best with smaller particle sizes.
Will it be for a refugium or deep sandbed?
Sand that will be used for filtration or refugium, we suggest using smaller particles that will give bacteria more surface area to grow and thrive on.
How much sand do I need?
Below is a table of common tank sizes and how many pounds of Oolite Sand is required to achieve a certain depth. Results may vary depending on the aquascaping in your tank, overflow styles, and the specific tank manufacturer. We always recommend getting a little extra sand to make sure you have enough on hand when you are filling your tank.

seemed to assist in initial tank cycling By Ricky` on 11/27/2016Ricky` would recommend this product to a friendVery beautiful white color sand, very small sand, although everyone says only for a low flow tank, with some dialing in on your power heads and inflow it can work for a medium to high flow tank as well, seemed to assist in the new tank cycle although i have no data to say it otherwise is "live" i think all live sand depends mostly on how fresh it is, i got mine fresh, check your expiration dates!!

Love this Sands! By Mako417 on 3/24/2014Mako417 would recommend this product to a friendBeautiful white powdery sand. Looks awesome. Yes, can be messy when first setting up but a little care and its not to bad. Required a little adjustment of power heads to keep from blowing it around but no big deal. Coolest thing is the ripples in the sand from my power heads in wave mode. Great Product.
A little light By Kyle on 6/22/2013Kyle would recommend this product to a friendPurchased 80lbs for my tank and used it all. Looks great, and is really great for bacteria. However, it gets stirred up easier than any sand I've ever used...
Nice for my Fuge DSB! By Christian on 3/21/2013Christian would recommend this product to a friendI bought 20lbs for my Fuge DSB. I currently run Crushed coral in main display.
Happy with the way it looks, and the cleaning packet worked somewhat OK. I still rinsed very thoroughly to make sure it didnt cloud my tank.
Happy with the sand and hopefully it makes a nice home for my little critters!
Great quality sand! By Streamin on 1/28/2013Streamin would recommend this product to a friendOrdered 140 lbs of this sand for my tank and DSB refugium. Sand is great! Very fine grains but very little cloudiness after the initial settle. After a week the tank is crystal clear. Sand itself looks fantastic and it was very easy to scape in around my rocks due to the fine nature.
Great Fine Live Sand By Robert on 10/27/2012Robert would recommend this product to a friendI like to use Fine sand for Nano systems. Might not be suitable for larger tanks. This sand is great. Thanks again BRS
