- ApexEL Aquarium Monitor - BRS Special Edition - Neptune Systems (DISCONTINUED)
You can relax about your reef tank knowing that the Apex EL BRS Special Edition has your back. The BRS SE Apex EL monitors key tank parameters and comes pre-configured to send you alerts via the built-in WiFi if anything is amiss.
It's hard to overstate the value of having an aquarium monitor that can not only track your aquarium's vital elements, but warn you immediately if something is going wrong. Aquarium equipment rarely seems to fail when we're around to catch it, and even if we are around it may not be obvious that something is off. When a piece of equipment fails, it's critical to know right away so that corrective action can be taken to avoid a disaster.
Not everyone is prepared to take the leap and invest in a full-blown aquarium controller. For some, a controller like the full Apex System may seem intimidating and complicated, while for others the expense may be too high when first getting started. With the Apex EL BRS Special Edition, you get the monitoring and communication functions of the Apex System at a fraction of the cost with no need for complicated programming. After connecting the Apex EL head unit to your home's Wifi network and entering your mobile contact info into Neptune System's cloud-based Fusion program, you can be up and running with monitoring and alerts in as little as 10-15 minutes.
Monitor Key Elements:
- High & Low Water Level
Temperature is one of the most critical parameters in any aquarium, but it's very difficult to visually determine if something is off before there are negative effects. Without a monitor, a heater that has failed off could go unnoticed for days or longer unless you happen to put your hand in the aquarium. The effects of a heater that has failed on may be much more obvious, but it's likely that the first sign will be stressed or dying fish and corals. With the Apex EL monitoring system you can get a warning before things start to die.
While it's often not wise to chase a specific pH number, maintaining a stable pH within an acceptable range plays an important role in fish and coral health. pH can also be an indicator of other elements of reef chemistry and may give an indication if CO2 levels are elevated or carbonate hardness has dropped. Knowing where your pH is at and when it may be falling outside of your targeted range may help with troubleshooting other issues in the aquarium.
Water Level Monitoring
Managing the water level in your aquarium is incredible important to your livestock, your equipment, and potentially your home. Salinity, circulation, filtration, and heating all revolve around maintaining proper water levels in your system. If your ATO fails off or runs out, the return pump could run dry and burn out. If the return pump stops working, filtration and heating cease. Worse yet, if your ATO were to get stuck on, this could not only affect tank parameters, but could lead to flooding and severe damage to your home. Having an early warning system in place for any of these scenarios is nearly priceless.
The included Dual Float Switch assembly plugs directly into the I/O port of the Apex head unit and provides a bracket with two water level float switch sensors. The two float switches can be adjusted to your desired water depth and positioned to provide alerts for either a high water overfill alarm or low water underfill alarm.
The Apex EL BRS Special Edition is easily expandable and it's possible to add any of the Neptune Systems modules such as the Leak Detection Kit (LDK), or even an Energy Bar 832 should you decide you're ready to get into a full controller in the future.

Solid Entry Option By Brian on 6/4/2020Brian would recommend this product to a friendI've had this bundle for a few months at this time and I am super happy to be one of the lucky people who snagged this. I've been reefing for about 6 years and had never used a controller, mostly due to large, upfront cost. The last two years involved a move to another state in which I broke down my 100 gallon and distributed it to friends/LFS. Here at my new location I set up a 20 gallon nano tank since I'm not sure if my job would move me again. But I also knew nanos can be more sensitive when it comes to fluctuation in parameters. Installation and set up was a BREEZE with everything pre-programmed. The pH and temperature probes are accurate and I am able to get push and text notifications if something wavers out of range. Also added was the water level sensor with float valves which works flawlessly. Knowing that I can add a power bar later makes me even more excited because it's something I can ease into without dropping the large upfront cost of the standard EL package. I hope BRS/Neptune continues to offer something similar to this model for new and budget reefers to allow them the same alerts and peace of mind I now have with my system. The only improvement I could suggest is having better naming in the programming for the water level sensor as it took a person with no previous Apex experience a bit of research to understand that it was called "SW1LWR" and what the difference was between "Open" and "Closed". However, that also allowed me to get more familiar with the Fusion software.
I asked, they provided, I bought! By Jeff on 1/31/2020Jeff would recommend this product to a friendAlways said on the forums I'm buying the first system that will monitor key parameters and send me alerts for under $300.00. Bonus it was Neptune and they made it expandable! Rating only on having it available. I'll update if anything less than the stellar Apex reputation I expect.
Will this work with a hotspot device like a phone, and keep memory when not on hotspot?
Yes that would work, once you reconnect everything will display just like before. It does need to retain power though.
Wheat is the difference between the EL and the regular APEX?
Is there anyway to get Salinity with this unit or do you need to jump to the base unit?
You would need to use the PM2 module with the head unit.
Looks like the float bracket will only work with a rimless tank? Any option for a tank with a rim?
Unfortunately there are no options for a rimmed tank.
If the power in your house goes out, Apex heartbeat (if turned on) should send you a text/email since the cloud loses contact with the Apex right?
That would be correct, you would get an email or text based off your preferences.
Is this special edition able to expand into a fully functional apex unit? Are there any software limitations in the fusion program?
The BRS Apex can be fully upgraded to a regular one, you just have to get the correct modules and probes. The fusion interface will be the same already though, no upgrade needed.
Besides this not having a port for salinity and orp. Is there any apex equipment this isn’t compatible with? For example the trident? I currently have the apex classic and am wondering if I can upgrade to this head and use a trident and whatever else I want from Neptune.
It is fully capable of being upgraded into a regular Apex that can run the trident and everything else Apex.
With the new el monitor, can i use EB8 or do i need the eb32 for outlets?
Thanks for reaching out to us. You can utilize your choice of energy bar based on your needs and can choose between either the EB832, EB8 or EB4. If you have any further questions please let us know. Take care!
Can I BUY just the Dual Float Switch Assembly w/Bracket?
Unfortunately not, it only comes with the Apex bundle.
Can trident be plugged directly into this?
Yes it can be plugged in via aquabus and power supply.
Is programming available to adjust the presets and when adding modules or future power bars?
It can be fully programmed and customized just like the EL or full size one.
Will this system manage a trident and DOS?
Is there any plan to add the 0-10v ports?
Hi, is there any difference between this unit and the Apex Controller Base Unit?
It will be missing the salinity probe, ORP and VDM ports.
What's the difference between this unit, the Apexel, and the apex base control unit you have listed for $400?
The biggest difference is the ports the head unit have and the energy bars. The full Apex and Apex EL both have energy bars but the new Apex does not. It is fully capable of being upgraded into a regular Apex that can run the trident and everything else Apex. Take care
Can you add the salinity and ORP probe to this unit ?
Is this backward compatible with the classic EB8?
Yes it would be compatible!
Will this work with the Neptune DOS system for water changes?
Does the mounting bracket for the switches have adjustments to fit an overhanging lip like the Trigger Systems ruby sumps?
Unfortunately not, it is only compatible with rimless sumps/tanks.
I this the same as the EL model without the eb8?
That would be correct, it also has water level monitoring.
