- Red Ogo - Live Red Ogo Gracilaria Algae - AlgaeBarn
This item ships directly from AlgaeBarn.
Bright red and burgundy, with pointy fronds, Red Ogo adds color to any tank or refugium. It is also makes a healthy live seaweed food for herbivorous fishes.
AlgaeBarn's Red Ogo Algae (Gracilaria parvispora) is aquacultured in a controlled environment allowing them to treat and quarantine it, reducing any risk of unwanted parasites or hitchhikers within the algae. Red Ogo algae is a beautiful red and burgundy macroalgae that can add a splash of color to any refugium. Under the right conditions, it can grow pretty rapidly, and will consume nitrates and phosphates as it grows, reducing the amount of nutrients available for unwanted algae. This bushy red macroalgae is not only valuable for maintaining water quality, but it also makes a perfect home for small beneficial benthic creatures like copepods, isopods, and amphipods. Many reefers utilize a refugium setting to grow the algae within the sump which makes harvesting and managing the growth a breeze. Another huge benefit to growing Red Ogo is that is can help in moderating your aquarium's pH levels when running the refugium on a reverse photo-period from the display tank. This decorative red algae is also prized as a source of nutritious live seaweed for herbivorous fish such as tangs and rabbitfish. Red Ogo can be grown in the refugium and trimmings can occasionally be fed to hervivorous fish as a tasty treat.

How To Add Red Ogo to your Aquarium
Adding macroalgae is pretty easy and we highly suggest quarantining or at a minimum rinsing the algae with fresh saltwater before it is added to your tank. It will grow best in a dedicated refugium that has a moderate flow with a proper horticulture spectrum light like the Kessil H-series LED fixtures. We suggest starting with an 8-hour per day photoperiod, and adjusting the amount of light it receives as needed to maintain a bright red color and good growth.
Red Ogo Algae Maintenance
Really the only maintenance you will need to do with this algae is to harvest it when your refugium becomes full or in some cases starts to become too efficient at consuming nutrients. Every saltwater aquarium will be different, so it is very difficult to give a time frame, however, most reefers will harvest small amounts regularly instead of one large harvesting session sparingly. Harvesting small amounts regularly will produce a more stable growth and nutrient uptake rate.
PLEASE NOTE: AlgaeBarn goes to great lengths to treat, quarantine and remove any unwanted parasites, hitchhikers, and other organisms from their macroalgae. However, they do not guarantee that it is completely and totally free of anything unwanted. This is because sometimes spores, eggs, etc. can remain viable but not visible, despite the strict quarantine procedure. As a result, we always recommend that you properly quarantine anything new that you are adding to your tank.

Dead on arrival By Bob on 3/6/2020Bob wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI ordered 4 oz of this and it was cold and dead upon arrival. I would not recommend ordering if you live in a cold area of the country.
Terrible By Darren on 2/20/2020Darren wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI ordered 4oz of the red ogo. It’s all chopped up into 1 to 3 inch pieces. I can barely keep it in the refugium. It’s all over in my sump. Hopefully it grows fast so I can keep it in a bigger mass to stay where it’s supposed to. Not sure if it’s supposed to be like that or maybe I got a Person still training on how to pack this stuff.
