- NemProtect Powerhead Guard for Vortech MP40 - Wavemaker Guards
With the recent influx of 3D printed products hitting the market, there have been a handful of innovative products. The new NemProtect stands out as a really great answer to the needs of anemone keepers everywhere. Flow is a critical element in reef and anemone tanks, but powerheads pose a serious risk to wandering anemones. Not only can a powerhead destroy a prized anemone, but the result can threaten the entire tank if not caught immediately.
One of the most popular solutions for in-tank flow is the Ecotech Vortech pumps. While the foam guards can keep anemones from getting pulled into the wet side cage, they clog quickly with detritus and reduce flow dramatically. The new NemProtect guards create a greater surface area for water flow while simultaeniously diffusing the intake suction and increasing distance from the powerhead. The Nemprotect literally just slips onto the wet side of the Vortech pump and stays put via friction fit. The front of the cover comes off, facilitating removal from the wet side for maintenance. Anemones can't get through the numerous tiny holes, and the high surface area of the guard avoids clogging and reduces flow loss. The result is a long-lasting, low maintenance anemone guard that improves overall flow in the system; a win-win!
- Wider, gentler intake flow
- Reduced flow loss
- Long lasting
- Low maintenance

Great product! By John on 4/13/2019John would recommend this product to a friendI've had these for about 6 months now and they have made a big difference. Like others have said, "...it keeps your livestock out." I have had a to keep a sharp eye out with the original covers where the livestock slide in when the pumps are in slow modes for feeding or cleaning and sure enough I am having to chase something out of them. I went from the open head to the filter cover which made things nicer. However, then there is another source to clean with all the foods and other bios getting trapped in them. If we are gone for a few days these tend to get pretty nasty which could cause unwanted chemistry changes. Going to these covers has made a world of difference for me. Biggest thing is less maintenance and cleaning of them. I've gone from every other day cleaning the filter pads to every couple of months just wiping them down.
There is just a little difference in the water flow because the design is different from the original head. With the original head I could not turn the power head to 100% with out causing a little bit of a sand storm in the tank or in the 85%-90% range getting a valley cut through my sand after a few hours. I can now run these at 100% for an extended amount of time with no worries of them changing my landscape or causing and occasional sand storm.
Yes I highly recommend these!!
Amazing By Mandi29221 on 4/11/2019Mandi29221 would recommend this product to a friendDoes exactly what the description says. Worth every penny. My puffer gets sucked up on it and then slide off. No dead fish or anemones. Love it. It doesnt reflect the water like others think. It is kinda big but it works so no worries
Best Thing For Anemones By Angrytang on 3/19/2019Angrytang would recommend this product to a friendDoesn't clog, very easy to install, good flow and it will keep anemones from getting sucked in. Enough said.
Serve their purpose at a cost By KNM on 2/22/2019KNM would recommend this product to a friendOverall they do what they claim, but are unnecessarily large.
These are great! By Sheri on 1/18/2019Sheri would recommend this product to a friendI purchased these online via the manufacturer before they were available here in the US and on Bulk Reef Supply. They are great! They look good, easy to use, and stay put! they protect my reef and without these in place I know I would have lost livestock! They do not mess with my flow, highly recommend!
Excellent Product By CMO on 1/17/2019CMO would recommend this product to a friendAfter losing one of my favorite blennies to an MP40 I added these to my pumps. They are well made and super easy to manage / clean.
Many people will tell you that these are unnecessary for fish which I assure you is not true if you keep certain fish or eels that like to get in small spaces. Blennies in particular like to sit on top of these pump and can get sucked in. Also, when my eel is cruising the tank looking for food I've seen him on several occasions swim directly into my MP40s while on (luckily I have these protection guards).
While 99.9% of the time there will be no issue with an uncovered pump, given enough time with certain fish something is bound to happen. If we are going to keep susceptible fish for our viewing pleasure in a relatively tiny water box, it is only right to make sure there is a 0.00% chance of them getting blended to death.
