Quick Stats
Zebra Turbo Snails are hardworking herbivores that can make a noticeable difference in aquariums with persistent algae growth. They continuously graze across live rock and aquarium glass, feeding on hair algae, film algae, and diatoms. Their strong appetite and larger size make them one of the more effective snail options for established reef tanks that need extra help keeping algae under control.
Because Zebra Turbo Snails grow larger than many other cleanup crew snails, they are not ideal for very small aquariums. They can also be somewhat clumsy and may knock over unsecured coral frags or loose rockwork as they move around the tank. Zebra Turbo Snails are unable to flip themselves back over when they fall, so they should be checked regularly and turned upright when needed.
Natural Habitat
Zebra Turbo Snails are commonly found in warm, shallow coastal waters where they live on rocky reefs, rubble zones, and other hard surfaces with plenty of algae growth. They spend much of their time grazing across rocks and reef structures, feeding on the thin layers of algae and diatoms that naturally develop in these areas. In the aquarium, a mature aquascape with plenty of live rock helps recreate this natural feeding environment.
Algae Control
Zebra Turbo Snails are best known for their strong appetite for nuisance algae. They graze on hair algae, film algae, and diatoms growing across live rock, aquarium glass, and other hard surfaces. Their larger size allows them to cover more surface area than many smaller cleanup crew snails, making them a good choice for established aquariums with moderate to heavy algae growth.
Like any cleanup crew animal, Zebra Turbo Snails should be used as part of a broader algae control plan. Maintaining proper nutrient levels, providing adequate flow, and addressing the source of excess algae are still important for long-term control.
Aquarium Requirements
An established aquarium with typical reef tank water parameters is ideal for Zebra Turbo Snails. Becuase they can grow to 2" or larger, they are best for larger aquariums.
Minimum Aquarium Size: 30 Gallons
Aquascape: Make sure there is plenty of live rock to provide ample surface area for grazing.

Diet & Feeding
Zebra Turbo Snails are herbivores that primarily feed on hair algae, film algae, and diatoms growing on the rockwork and aquarium glass. Their constant grazing makes them one of the most effective natural algae control options in reef aquariums. In most established tanks with natural algae growth, supplemental feeding is not necessary.
In newer systems, supplemental feeding with dried seaweed or sinking algae-based wafers is a good idea.
Temperament & Compatibility
Zebra Turbo Snails are peaceful and reef safe, making them compatible with most community reef aquariums. They coexist well with fish, corals, and other invertebrates and spend their time grazing on algae.
They are one of the larger cleanup crew options out there and can be clumsy, so make sure to secure any loose frags or rockwork.
Predatory species such as pufferfish, triggerfish, and some wrasses may prey on snails and should be avoided. In some instances, hermit crabs may attack snails in an effort to steal their shells, so keep that in mind when planning out your cleanup crew.
