Selecting the right sand: When choosing the right substrate for your tank, it is important to keep a few things in mind.
How much flow will be in the tank?
Aquariums with high amounts of water movement will require sand with a larger grain size. Smaller particles can be blown around easily.
What kind of inhabitants will you be keeping?
Many species do require particular types of sand, like gobies, jawfish, and wrasses. Fish and invertebrates that like to burrow or sift through the sand will do best with smaller particle sizes.
Will it be for a refugium or deep sandbed?
Sand that will be used for filtration or refugium, we suggest using smaller particles that will give bacteria more surface area to grow and thrive on.
Below is a table of common tank sizes and how many pounds of Natural Reef Sand is required to achieve a certain depth. Results may vary depending on the aquascaping in your tank, overflow styles, and the specific tank manufacturer. We always recommend getting a little extra sand to make sure you have enough on hand when you are filling your tank.

Great option for sand sifters By Reefsmith on 6/8/2020Reefsmith would recommend this product to a friendI've had a 1-2 inch bed in my tanks for the past 20yrs and this is the grade I use to keep my gobies and nessarius snails happy. The grains are of a medium grain size, so they're large enough to help keep from forming anoxic zones in the sand in case the bed gets too deep but small enough for gobies to sift and shift all day every day, while adding nice light color to contrast with the rest of the reef,
Perfect! By Nick on 11/19/2019Nick would recommend this product to a friendArrived in great shape! In the tank cycling now. Must rinse though.
It's sand! By Ian on 7/13/2018Ian would recommend this product to a friendShipped fast and arrived in a pretty beat up box. I expected that with such a heavy package though. IT IS DUSTY, RINSE IT. It even states on the package to rinse, and its not that hard to do. Took me about 30 minutes to rinse a bag in a five gallon bucket with the garden hose. Color is accurate to the picture and the size is perfect for what I needed. Its very similar to the size and shape of steel cut oats. Very happy with it.
Great sand for a high flow tank By Hunter on 6/26/2018Hunter would recommend this product to a friendThis stuff looks great, just be sure to wash it thoroughly to take out the dust, I learned the hard way.
Good Sand By ANDY on 6/24/2018ANDY would recommend this product to a friendHavent used it yet, but looks like it has good size grains. Better value than live sand.
Fast Delivery By Ted on 3/14/2018Ted would recommend this product to a friendI ordered this, and got it in two days... I'll edit my comment once I get it in my tank... I just wanted to give BRS credit right away, for getting it shipped the day I ordered. In fact, I ordered 3 different things, and they all went out the same day... And it all just arrived. They're faster than Amazon. I'm impressed.
