Copper Test Kit for Accurate Treatment Monitoring

  • Measures Total Copper From 0 to 4.0 ppm or mg/L
  • Measures Free and Chelated Copper
  • Essential for Copper-Based Parasite Treatments
  • Works in Both Freshwater and Saltwater Aquariums
  • Provides 90 Tests

This Copper Test Kit measures total copper levels from 0 to 4.0 mg/L, also expressed as parts per million. Accurate copper testing is critical when treating external parasites, as copper must be maintained at therapeutic levels for the full duration of treatment. This kit provides up to 90 tests and is suitable for both freshwater and saltwater aquariums.

Copper should never be present in aquariums containing invertebrates such as snails, shrimp, crayfish, or corals. It is also not recommended for planted freshwater aquariums or ponds. In some cases, copper may enter an aquarium through tap water due to leaching from household plumbing.

Why Testing for Copper Matters

Copper is commonly used to treat parasitic infections in fish. To be effective, copper concentration must remain within a specific therapeutic range for several weeks. Frequent testing is required to ensure levels remain stable throughout treatment.

Some fish species are highly sensitive to copper. Always follow the copper medication manufacturer’s directions carefully to avoid overdosing or prolonged exposure.

Directions for Testing Copper Levels

  1. Read all instructions thoroughly before testing. Do not allow test solution to enter the aquarium.
  2. To remove the childproof cap, push the red tab to the left while unscrewing the cap.
  3. Fill a clean test tube with 5 ml of aquarium water to the indicated line.
  4. Add 10 drops of Copper Test Solution, holding the bottle completely vertical for consistent drop size.
  5. Cap the test tube and shake for 5 seconds. Do not cover the opening with your finger.
  6. Wait one minute for color development.
  7. Remove the cap and hold the test tube upright over the white area of the color chart. View from above and compare the sample color to the chart.
  8. Even a very faint color indicates the presence of copper.
  9. Rinse the test tube with clean water after each use.

What the Results Mean

This test kit measures both free and chelated copper. If copper is being used as a medication, maintain the concentration recommended on the product label. Because free copper levels decline rapidly, daily testing is recommended during active treatment.

Reducing Copper Levels

To lower copper concentration, perform a partial water change and/or use a copper-removal media.
