The cartridges I have use a "hard" sponge or space at the top and were bought from BRS some years ago. It's actually is a little smaller in diameter so it allows DI resin along it's sides. Should I replace those at the same time as I replace the sponge at the bottom? Can these sponges be used to replace that?

If you have newer canisters made from soft plastic sku #200002 then this would be the correct replacement sponge for the bottom of the canister.

How do you know when the old one needs to be replaced?

The sponges will last a handful or so changes. It is hard to say exactly but we usually like to change them after 3-7 DI changes.
