- Nero 5 Powerhead (3000 GPH) - Aqua Illumination
Small, Powerful, and Smart!
Max Flow - 3000 GPH
Aqua Illumination's Nero 5 creates an adjustable broad flow that is strong but gentle at the same time. Traditional propeller designs produce a hard stream that can irritate corals where the Nero 5's innovative propeller pushes water in a wide pattern that can move foods, detritus, or other free-floating particles around without blasting corals directly. Powerheads have many different uses around a reef tank, but the main goal is to produce enough flow to keep low-flow spots from forming in your tank and help elevate detritus to be sucked into the filtration. With BlueTooth LE technology you can set the pump up into different modes, or create a daily schedule to change the flow up throughout the day.
- Whisper Quiet
- Compact Design
- Broad Flow
Now with BlueTooth LE, connect to your pumps faster with a longer range and unlocks a bunch of features, but mostly lets you skip the whole process of creating a wireless network to interface through. Now with the Aqua Illumination Nero 5, open the MyAi App, choose a mode, and control the flow in your aquarium. Different flow modes let you choose what is right for your corals and fish. A couple notable modes are the Random and Schedule modes, create a full-blown daily schedule that cycles through different modes and settings throughout the day, or let the Nero 5 randomize itself with the Random mode. The included controller only has one button but is very powerful and if you do not want to control the pump through a smart device don't worry, pressing or holding the button for different lengths of time can change the speed, mode, or turn the pump off or on without having to access any additional control interfaces.
- Random - Keep your tank guessing with the random flow mode. The Nero 5 will randomly change its flow rate throughout the day creating natural water movement throughout your reef tank.
- Pulse - Creating a standing wave can be done with the Nero 5 in Pulse Mode. The pulse interval can be changed to harmonize with your aquarium, along with the max flow rate. Having a wave can cause additional stress on your aquarium, but is a great method for lifting settled detritus from hard to reach areas.
- Constant - Set it and forget it! Just set the appropriate flow rate and the Nero 5 will keep flowing at that speed until you change the mode or flow.
- Schedule - Create a schedule that can utilize multiple different flow modes. With the MyAi app creating a schedule for your flow is simple and can be done in minutes!
- Feed - If you target feed, having a pump with feed mode is a requirement. Just hold the driver button for 2-5 seconds to put the Nero 5 into feed mode for 10 minutes.
- All-Off - Turn off your pump whenever you want with full control over when they turn back on. Just hold the driver button for 6 or more seconds to turn the pump off. Touching the button again will restart the pump.

Mounting the Nero 5 only takes a minute and with the included magnetic mounting system moving the pump around only takes a second. Giving around 15° of movement, you can angle the Nero 5 to direct flow in your aquarium where you need it. The two-part mounting system incorporates an inner magnet and an outer magnet that can couple together through 1/2" of glass or less, and the pump then sits into the beveled inner magnet for an isolated and quiet mounting system.

Killed fish By gcdc26 on 12/27/2019gcdc26 wouldn't recommend this product to a friendThe pump does a great job moving water and I was initially very pleased with it. However that changed after it sucked in a healthy Sunburst anthias and chopped her in two. I feel pretty gutted over it and wish I had just stuck to vortechs. I am now ordering a 3D printed guard. This is a major design flaw that needs to be addressed by AI.
Can’t sync 2 pumps By John on 12/8/2019John would recommend this product to a friendI love the pump as a stand alone. I’m upgrading my tank and got a second one and just spent 6 hours trying to figure out how to sync them. It says you can have one child/slave mode but it doesn’t work. After research apparently everyone with 2 pumps is having the same issue. According to R2R AI said it would have a firmware update in August. It’s December... If you only need one pump this is a great pump, if you need 2 pumps don’t get this. You’ll be disappointed. I should have researched more.
Silent By John on 11/29/2019John would recommend this product to a friendGreat pump, easy to set up. Would be 5 stars if the magnet didn’t suck. Plan on a alternative magnet if your glass is a half inch.
Kills small fish By chris on 9/30/2019chris wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI just watched in horror as this pump injected and chopped my new six line erase to bits
almost perfect By Rodney on 5/28/2019Rodney would recommend this product to a friendPros
Sleek, low profile design
Control app done right. Other manufactures take note.
Quieter then most pumps. On par with Vortech QD
Magnet is good for maybe 10mm. But it's a easy fix.
Can't mount too close to surface, pulls air
Random and anti-sync By Justin on 5/20/2019Justin would recommend this product to a friendJust an FYI... Current firmware of the Nero 5 pump does not support anti sync and random mode. The only way to accomplish "antisync" in random mode is to setup each pump independently and do not set up a parent child relationship. AI is aware of the issue according to a reef2reef thread and is working on a firmware update to fix the issue.
Great pump By Derek on 4/13/2019Derek would recommend this product to a friendI purchased two of these pumps for my tank. These were replacing Ecotech QD pumps. These pumps are dead silent which was a big reason I chose them. I have both pumps mounted on the rear glass of my tank and these blow a nice wide spread flow. I plan on using these in all my tanks
Not a good pump for fish tanks By David on 4/12/2019David wouldn't recommend this product to a friendThis pump will KILL your fish do not buy!!! It will suck your fish up and kill it I'm getting rid of mine!!!
Drop dead silent By RedBeard on 4/6/2019RedBeard would recommend this product to a friendSo far love this pump. It is on a 30 gallon tank in my little girls room so the silence is golden. Moves a TON of water, running in random with 40% max is plenty. The bluetooth app is super intuitive and quite functional.
Nice for all small Tank. By Melvin on 3/21/2019Melvin wouldn't recommend this product to a friend1/2" glass is a joke. It falls off daily. 300 gallon tank is way out of it's league. I was just using it for a dead spot. I am going to return it to BRS. Not worth the $$$.
Not that happy with it. By Neojeo on 3/15/2019Neojeo wouldn't recommend this product to a friendThe price point is high... The magnetic is not strong enough, it has fallen off my glass twice. I have 13mm.
The way the wholes are made in the back it keeps getting snails stuck inside. Causing the pump to make a loud noise or shut off. They need a cover and re make it.
I lost a clown fish. It got stuck to the back and again the wholes are to big and they fish could not get away. It even got my tang but I was home, turned off the pump and it swam away.
I wish I never bought this pump. Customer service does not care of these issues or I lost my clown fish. I emailed them multiple times.
Doa By michael on 3/13/2019michael wouldn't recommend this product to a friendPump was dead out of box.controller is cheap.not impressed
Are these controllable through the Apex?
At this time this pump is not controllable through the Apex. Have a great day!
I currently have one Nero 5 in my Red Sea Reefer 170 and I am having trouble creating a wave by using the pulse mode. I am curious if anyone has a good starting point as far as the on/off settings to create a wave within the pulse mode options.
This is something I played around with when writing a video for them. Along with that, I've programmed a standing wave in a couple of my tanks before, using an aquarium controller. What I found is that with most commonly sized tanks intervals of less than 1-second ON/OFF will typically create a wave like effect. I'd recommend starting there and working down by 1/10th of a second until you find that sweet spot!
Thinking of buying 2 Nero 5’s for my 66g reef tank. Doesn’t look like u can do “anti-sync mode” with 2 pumps on th AI app like on maxspecht gyre.
How would u do anti-sync with Nero 5. Thanks
The Phase option allows a user dial in an exact flow pattern when using 2 or more Nero powerheads.
Your Nero pumps will have an identical flow setting. You can also think of 0 Degrees as a "sync" mode. For example, if your first Nero is at 100%, your second Nero would also be at 100%.
Your first Nero will turn on at the 0.0 second mark and turn off at the 1.0 second mark. Your second Nero will turn on at the 0.5 second mark and turn off at the 1.5 second mark. 90 Degree settings help create a very dynamic flow pattern.
The second Nero will be on the exact opposite schedule of the first. For example, if your first Nero is at 100% the second Nero would be at 1%. You can think of 180 Degrees as an "Anti-sync" mode.
