Maintaining the proper salinity is an important part of keeping a healthy saltwater aquarium. The Tropic Marin High-Precision Hydrometer & Measuring Cylinder Set makes it easy to check your aquarium's specific gravity with consistent, repeatable results. The set includes a precision glass hydrometer and a 500mL measuring cylinder, allowing you to take measurements outside the aquarium without interference from water movement or equipment.
The hydrometer uses a finely graduated scale to measure specific gravity from 1.021 to 1.031 in increments of 0.0001. Unlike electronic salinity testers or refractometers, it doesn't require batteries or calibration solutions. Simply fill the measuring cylinder with aquarium water, carefully lower the hydrometer into the sample, and read the specific gravity at the water's surface. The cylinder's tall, narrow design allows the hydrometer to float freely, while its wide base provides stability during testing.
High-Precision Specific Gravity Measurements
The included glass hydrometer provides fine-scale readings to help you monitor changes in aquarium salinity. Its clearly marked blue scale makes it easy to identify small differences in specific gravity, making it useful for checking established aquariums, preparing new saltwater, and verifying salinity during water changes. The hydrometer is calibrated for use at 77°F (25°C), so maintaining the proper sample temperature is important for accurate results.
Stable and Convenient Measuring Cylinder
The included 500mL measuring cylinder provides a controlled environment for taking measurements. Made from durable, transparent polypropylene, it features molded volume markings, a stable base, and a built-in pouring spout. By keeping the hydrometer away from aquarium currents and other disturbances, the cylinder helps make readings easier and more consistent.
How to Use
- Fill the measuring cylinder with up to 400mL of aquarium water at 77°F (25°C).
- Carefully lower the clean, dry hydrometer into the cylinder, ensuring it floats freely without touching the sides or bottom.
- Allow the hydrometer to settle, then read the specific gravity at the water's surface, not at the raised meniscus around the glass.
- After testing, rinse the hydrometer and measuring cylinder with fresh water to prevent salt residue.
