This meter reads the conductivity of the water in microseimens, from 0-200mS, which can then be converted with the included chart.
Have a great day!
Great Question, The salinity module comes with a bottle of solution for calibrating the probe. This will need to be performed before the initial use.
The American Marine PINPOINT Salinity Monitor will immediately give an accurate measure of salt levels in any aquarium. The reading is fully temperature compensated. With proper care this PINPOINT Salinity monitor should last a lifetime.
PINPOINT Salinity Monitor Features:
- Includes conversion chart
- Includes probe
- Accurate temperature compensated measurements
- Monitor is powered by a 9-volt battery (not included)
not accurate and not reliable By Linz34 on 6/8/2017Linz34 wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI have an nothing but trouble with this monitor. It will read differently each time you place it in the water. I found I had to calibrate it with each use meaning I had to keep a gallon of premade salt water availalbe with the tesing salinity.
My go to salinity checker! By DivingTheWorld on 12/19/2014DivingTheWorld would recommend this product to a friendSalinity is one of those difficult to test things in a reef tank. I don't know why, but most checkers are inaccurate. Refractometers are so so and often read a little high. Plastic hydrometers for the most part are inaccurate. I have tried them all.
This Pinpoint Salinity Monitor is by far the best combination of simplicity and accuracy. I have verified the accuracy to be dead on using a Tropic Marin High Precision Hydrometer.
And the best part is the ease. You just put the probe in your tank or sump, shake it around a little to get the air out, then wait a couple minutes.
I highly recommend this monitor!
Feeling particular ?? By David on 5/9/2014David would recommend this product to a friendIf you are like me and are just a bit particular this meter will set you free. I use it to check the salinity in my display once a week. You can really see how evaporation affectes the sailinity. The meter WILL bounce all over the place until the temperature of the probe meets the temperature of the water. Be patient and wait about a solid 2 minutes for the temperature to stabalize. After the temperature stabalizes it really dosen't move. This is a MUST have device for a water change. I change 30 gallons at a time of my 120 tank. This device allows me to get right down to the last tablespoon of salt. Told ya I was particular...
BTW I have 2 refractometers for sale ;-)
A Good Guide By Andrew on 3/28/2014Andrew would recommend this product to a friendI calibrated this device using the included solution & when I tested my water it was off by .01. I also use a Milwaukee Digital Refractometer and the calibrating solution. I would say that it is a handy device for checking the salinity of your water but not a failsafe for say a saltwater mixing bucket. The salinity jumps around a bit during the day from 51-52 on both my reef tanks. And, yes, I do have a ATO unit, its the Tunze that I really like. Right now looking at my 70G reef the salinity reads 52.2 and I tested the water on both of my Milwaukee Refractometers and its at 1.025 which should be a reading of 51.3. On my 50G reef the reading is 51.8.
As I stated before, I would not use this as my primary device but more of a guide. Both probes are in the sump and low flow areas, away from light and a water temp. of 80 degrees.
Working well for over 3 years. By SoLiD on 11/14/2011SoLiD would recommend this product to a friendIt takes some getting used to, but you have to convert the reading to Specific Gravity using a chart. I've left mine on for over 5 days with it constantly reading by accident without any negative results. If you have stray voltage from a pump, heater, or power head your readings will bounce all over the place, so be sure you don't have those issues first. It does what it says and it's pretty easy to remember that 53.0ms = 35ppm = 1.0259.
accuracy and a time saver! By David on 5/19/2010David would recommend this product to a friendconsidering how many times, i check salinity/SG, i could have saved hours of time by using this monitor earlier.
i first tested it with two different calibration fluid samples and the unit was consistent with both.
it is very easy and quick to use. simply insert into water, swirl a bit, and wait up to 1 min for temp equalization. then read the number.
my only regret is not getting one sooner.
